I set a "two tank limit" for myself when running the saw. Any more than that, and I'm good for nothing the next day. Splitting? Well, I just go until it get's dark, or the pile of rounds goes away. At times I take a break to move the splits away from the run off table to make room.

Man, I'm the opposite. I can saw all day, but put me at the splitter and in 4 hours I get bored and prone to doing dumb stuff. I end up stopping and moving wood around to keep me sharp.

That is pretty good. I use a 2.5 gallon fuel can and there is no way I could empty it twice in a day cutting.

I'm guessing he was talking about two chainsaw tanks, not two gas cans full.

On the fatwood thing, I use it for fire starting but not as shipped... I don't have news paper... the fatwood will start with a match or quickly with a lighter. The Amazon box of the stuff (banana box size) wasn't bad but everything was like 1"x1" then we split it down to pencil size, throw a couple in with some light wood or other kindling/scrap and it will start without effort. I bought that giant box a couple years ago and have used maybe 1/4 of it. We use that or drier lint in egg cartons topped with melted wax then cut up the cups... Using these methods I have been able to start fires with larger wood and less effort than a bunch of kindling and some paper.

The 4x12's I picked up for cheap for firewood are working good for now :), need to take some time this winter and get some maple and such from my brother that has fallen over the year for next year but $60 for a solid half cord of wood is a decent backup plan...

Yeah, like I said I don't buy my fatwood, it is here in the ground naturally and I'm trying to figure out the best/easiest way to get it to a useful size. I've been cutting the smaller "logs" into sections 6"-8" long and hand splitting them into pencil sized pieces (good size for starting) , the way I have been doing it is very labor intensive and takes a while to do.

Remember when you were younger? It seemed like you could run forever and never had to stop to "catch your breath". When I was working and had a chainsaw in my hands for 8 hrs per day 5 and sometimes 6 days per week, it got to the point where I didn't feel the chainsaw any longer. It was merely an extension of my arms. These were no light weight chainsaws either. I don't seem to get that feeling much anymore.

Took it out to the road and set it in the ditch, called the supplier to come get their tank!

SR

That sounds to me like your all done heating with propane and going back to all wood heat which is ok but and when you get to old for firewood work, theres always wood pellets and you still get that wonderful wood heat sensation.......
