By the time I left in 2017, they were down to under 40,000 weekends.

And I expect that curve to continue or accelerate downwards. Newspapers have the same future as landline telephony. A big downward spiral.

The store my wife and I own had a Greensboro News & Record machine out front as long as I can remember. We didn't get anything from it, it was just there for people. The lady (older) would fill it everyday, sometimes before I get there at 5:50 AM. Her health got bad, we started having days where we would have an empty machine. People got mad at us, we told them we have nothing to do with it. Over the course of several months of trying to get the issue resolved I was informed the carrier who delivered papers to 2 other stores less than 2 miles from our store said it was too much of an inconvenience to catch us. I was also informed we didn't have a paper machine. I said we have had one for the 12+ years we've owned the store and it had papers in it everyday until a few months ago. They finally picked the machine up that we didn't have. Done with the News & Record.

It's the end of a dying technology.

Unfortunately, it's also the end of accountable reporting for a lot of communities.

My in-laws still use phone books. I’ll bet people still get a TV guide.

Well if you soak the phone books in water, the big city ones make a pretty fair test medium for testing bullet expansion. I guess that is one use for them. What is a TV guide? :) I havent seen one of those in at least 20 years, maybe longer.

And that is the saddest part about it. When the Hobby's put their name on the Houston Post it was reflective of them. Same with the Jones' and the Houston Chronicle. If something was wrong in a story everyone in town was going to find out about it. At least back in the 1950's-1970's they would. Maybe even later for some things.

We took both Houston papers. One in the morning and one in the evening. Later we got the Houston Chronicle delivered in East Texas and also the Shreveport Times. Really got to like the Shreveport Times. Again, if something was incorrect in the paper everyone would know about it. The papers were held responsible for what their reporters wrote and editors could edit.

I have also over the years frequently read the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, the Pleasanton Express, Austin American-Statesman, Temple Daily Telegraph, San Antonio Express News, San Antonio Light (years ago when it was in business), Odessa American, the Ft. Worth Star Telegram and the historic San Augustine Rambler.

One of my first jobs was in the Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms for the Texas House of Representatives. We ran a 'clipping service' for members. Sat at a big table and went through stacks of news papers delivered from all over the state every day to House members and we 'clipped' articles of interest to each member, put them in a folder and delivered them to their offices daily. It was a fun job but you had to be careful not to stop and read too much or you would be late with the delivery.

In the 60's a Houston phone book was about 3" thick or more. My cousin married a guy who impressed us young 'un's by tearing a Houston phone book in half with his hands when we wanted him to impress our friends. He also could wrap himself around a corner post in wet, boggy ground and pull it out of the ground by himself. We thought he was superman.

I no longer live in Houston - but when I did during for my first 70 years, I enjoyed reading Lynn Ashby's and Leon Hale's column. Leon Hale, from Winedale, Texas was the best writer in history; my opinion of course. I have several of Leon's books. Sadly, Leon passed away as did his yarns posted in the Editor's section.

When we moved to Georgia, the local paper wanted $12.95 per month for a 6 page weekly paper. One page of month-old news and 5 pages of ads for businesses a hundred miles away. Nah - the internet and TV gives me more news than I really want. Newspapers, phone books, landlines... fading quickly.
