Capless fuel tanks... is the idea as dumb as it seems?

My 2014 Ram 3500 was cap less till I turned a piece of aluminum down with groove for an o-ring! My concern was the wintertime crap from the roads. Did the same for my transfer tank nozzle. That way I don't drip diesel or have to worry about dirt in nozzle.

No way to add a locking cap to any of the newest Ford trucks that I know of. Lots of discussion on the Ford forums about that and apparently no one makes anything that will fit. I'd love to have one - I drive a lot of dirt roads and have to make sure I blow the dust away from the fill each time I gas up.

If you've found something that works on the new trucks, share that information!

Probably not but not sure 100%. I bought a Stant key lock cap at Autozone. Mine fits just fine. I prefer a locking and sealing cap.

The biggest problem with the capless filler is when people try to add fuel from a can or fuel additives. These vehicles need the adapter/funnel that gets the fuel/additive down past the 2nd check valve. If you don't, you may damage the evac system and you will get a check engine light. If you are adding sta-bil, heet, octane booster, or other additives, read the manual. You may have the adapter stored near the spare tire or you may have to get one from the dealer.

All the discount auto joints have the skinny funnel for a couple bucks.

Ok I just got to ask I guess. It just not that hard to fuel up a tank with a cap. Why even risk the expensive results of dust, road grime etc. Is it a money saving issue ?

Why no caps?

I figured it had something to due with the EPA, controlling vapor and vacuum better, or something along those lines since it also includes that flapper door inside the neck. I do know this system prevents dirt and water from getting anywhere close to the tank on mine, better than the old cap style. The door has a rubber seal all the way around it so it seals well when the door is flipped closed.

If caps are so easy, why can't people tighten them after fueling? It is one of the most common reasons for the check engine light to come on.

I think it is just another cost cutting procedure done by the auto makers. Maybe the EPA may have something to do with it, but I am a cap kind of guy.

Makes me think how the motoring public got had really bad. Self service was something that came out (as I recall) to save a couple of cents a litre on fuel.

195s SERVICE STATION FILM STANDARD OIL COMPANY of CALIFORNIA "MAKE MINE SERVICE" 65654 MD - YouTube Look at those guys run!

I don't think many realize how the public gets less and less, and as old people die, no one remembers.

:) I don't remember quite that far back, but do remember the 60's service stations. Fond memories, from the Ding Ding pulling it, to the coin changer worn on the attendants belts. But then I also remember pulling in and waiting an eternity while the only attendant helped another customer first. Overall I don't mind pulling in, pumping my own, and moving on. Not so much fun standing in the blowing snow in February though.

Mine doesn’t. It just has the same old door which allows crap in, and the “flapper” doesn’t look any different than on my last 5 GM trucks.
