How can it be that be an cop has so low demands for training and character? You are authorized to use deadly violence against civilians, it's a very serious matter for everybody that you have a police force that has high trust.

As to the house issue. Just thinking outloud.

So, I live in town. I come home from work and my street is barrackaded. I ask what's going on? Am told someone is holed up in my neighbor's house. I ask what's the plan? I'm told they've turned off the utilities and are waiting him out. Okay, I'll get a motel for the night for my family. Hafta go to Walmart and buy supplies for the family including a set of clothes for tomorrow. Tomorrow evening I try to go home. I'm told he still hasn't came out.

If you read that paragraph by putting yourself in that position rather than trying to argue your position, whatever position that might be, what would be your response to the LEO standing between you and your house??

It’s a tough situation all around. To some degree how much you mind being inconvenienced is dependent on if it is your house or that belonging to somebody else which is about to get destroyed.

Yep. That was my point. If I own the house I have plenty of patience. If I am the neighbor I described above I want this resolved today. Puts LEO in a very tough situation.

If the perp is armed and decides to come out shooting and kills the neighbor lady across the street who is standing at her living room window watching then what?

There was a case in Auburn Maine years ago when a “suspect” was holding a hostage at knifepoint, and was shot and killed by a police officer. Yet many people felt that it was “unjustified.” More recently a suspect ran out onto thin ice to elude pursuit, went through the ice and disappeared. Again, that was the LEO’s fault. To me, if you take a chance you should be ready to pay the consequences.

WE had a similar situation back in the early 80's. A 911 call to an address was responded to by a lone police officer. Before he got to the front door, he was shot down in the street by his car from someone inside the home he was going to check on. The sheriffs office and local PD waited the shooter out for, as I remember, a day and a half. It was in the winter and 20 below zero. It took one shot from a patient sheriff deputy laying out in that weather waiting for the offender to make the mistake of looking out the window at the rear of the house. There was teargas deployed to no avail during the incident. This is before swat teams were formed here.

My take on it back then, and now, they did the right thing in waiting for the shooter to make a mistake. The neighbors can go pound sand if they don't like being inconvenienced. It wasn't the PD or sheriffs office inconveniencing them. It was the guy who murdered a 22 year old Police officer.

Police blew up an innocent man痴 house in search of an armed shoplifter. Too bad, court rules.

The irony is the supreme court has ruled that the police are not obligated to protect to begin with. Talk about a merry go round...

This is done all the time around the country. Where a train derails, fires, tornados, etc, where people are not allowed to go to their homes until things are resolved, or made safe
