I have a 1963 Case 441 gas tractor. A few months ago, it was running good, I took it to a friend's and helped him mow with it. I left it at his place, then went back, recently and picked it up. I had a trusted friend get it, as I had just had hip replacement surgery. It ran great, loading it on, and unloading it from, the trailer. Parked it for a few more weeks, as there wasn't much work needed to be done with it. We did not notice that the air cleaner had fallen off of the M-S carb.
Yesterday, we started it, and it idled fin for a little while, then died. We checked the fuel, and it seemed to have run out. We refilled the tank, and started it back up. It would then only start with full choke, and when the choke is opened, would die. It seemed to be flooding easily. So, we took the carb apart, cleaned it, and got some dirt, but not much from it.
Put it back together, started well. Open the choke, and it DIES. Sucking air, real hard, into the carb, with the new air cleaner.
It idles well with the choke fully closed, but as soon as we try to throttle up, or open the choke, it sucks air very hard, and dies, refusing to idle.
I have some mechanical knowledge, but I'm no mechanic. It's a simple system, with that carb. And ran great, just a few weeks ago. But, the weather was much warmer then.
What am I missing?
