I've still NEVER seen a pellet tree out in the woods!

When they are small and sprout from pellet seeds they look like any other tree. When they mature they are very easily distinguished from other trees.

But to me, I wouldn't have a wood stove without my own wood... seems to defeat the purpose! I can count on one hand the number of cords of wood I've bought in my 64 years, mostly after just moving somewhere and needing the wood quick, and I've still NEVER seen a pellet tree out in the woods!

I agree 100%. I bought wood for one year in my life, for the first place that I ever rented. The landowner across the road was having his lot cut so I bought a few cords tree length on the landing; cut it, split it, and brought it across the road. I then ended up moving, so my landlord bought the wood from me. :thumbsup:

And for those of you who are scoffing at burning pellets you can buy a hammer and pellet mill to make your own, for about the same as a high end wood splitter.

A $5500 wood splitter can probably split 5 tons of wood an hour with 2 operators. How many tons can the pellet maker make an hour?

The big advantage of a pellet stove is convenience. Fill up the hopper and forget about it until the hopper is empty. Very nice in that regard.

I am a traditionalist when it comes to wood heat. I like cutting, splitting and stacking firewood along with filling up the stove, lighting it up, etc. Plus I get rid of the trees that blow down on the property and around here that is a lot.

Why does it need to be 5x5? Kinda an odd size to split firewood. There’s no doubt a commercial splitter is going to make significantly more tons of wood an hour. If I was going for the maximum tons an hour I’d be cutting 24” since that’s the biggest my stove will burn. Working with nice straight wood me and a helper can split and load this in 2 hours. With a higher output splitter than mine and not loading the truck 5 tons an hour isn’t far fetched.

What use would a dump truck be that didn’t dump? I pay 4mpg for that feature. Considering that’s 2 loads on my ton dump truck. 3 loads on a long bed pickup or 5-6 loads on a short bed truck the mileage isn’t that bad. This load is a tad less than half as much as that load.
