AllDodge, your spot on about NY property/school taxes. The exact same reason I left the Da$# state. I had a 1,700 sqft log home that I built on Cayuga Lake on property I purchased many years earlier. Literally last man on the grid, took my water out of the lake, had a septic, lived down a quarter mile dirt road between two corn fields, no kids in the school system. Property and school taxes started at $3,300/yr. 3 years later it was over $12,000/year. I packed up and left that Da$# state for the last time, back in 2009. Haven't spent a penny there since. They literally taxed me out of my retirement home.... BTW, home sat on 1 acre.

Sorry to the OP for the side discussion....

Be safe and be well.

Not defending tax rates, just discussing this.

What infrastructure is provided where you are? For example, what are the government maintained roads you drive on made of??

Well, septic, dirt roads, not a lot. It’s the waste of the money that is the issue. This is why the rates are so high and the return so low. Government employees live better than people with productive jobs in these states.

Years ago when I had my original 40x60 garage built I had contractor make it two story. For not much more money I doubled my space. If I had it to do over I would consider 3 story.
I've since added on to the 40x60 over the years a lot, but upstairs is great storage.

Without more specific information it would be hard to identify your buddy's problem.

Two large bird houses at the peak of the roof with no power just the 2 open vents at the peak of the roof, just open vent. There is no ceiling, just open rafters

I have same open rafters in both buildings and no open vents at the peak or anywhere else

Reading about open warehouses this is an issue with large buildings. Sure hope you have an answer to the issue, would be very helpful

I wish I did.

My heated shop has eave vents, no peak or end vents. No condensation or mold.

I'm hoping someone chimes in with a solution.

I was right around $50k for my 32x48x12. This included 2' overhangs, 6" concrete with heat in the floor, 4/12 trusses on 4' centers, R19 insulation in walls, and ~7" blown in the ceiling. 3 man doors, 5 windows, 2-8x10 insulated doors, 1 10x10 insulated door, dirtwork, electric, boiler system, and partially complete bathroom with shower, toilet and sink. I did everything other than building erection, dirtwork and concrete.

Wow, what surprises me is the indifference many people have towards the increaseses...”just put it on my (property) taxes” or “what can I do about it”...cut the money off.

We have roads that are constantly being redone. The amount of salt that is placed on the roads every years ensures that our vehicles will die a good decade earlier than most of the country. When I travel for business, the number of cars over 15years old really stands out. We do not have sewer, but we have water. Every year when my county tax bill comes, they include a separate page that outlines just about 100% of the bill is unfunded mandates from the state. My kids go to schools that are just average for the country, yet the state averages ~$22K/student on spending. Over 1M people have left the state since the dictator governor has come into power.

I fled NJ a few years ago, taxes doubled in 12 years, far more tax increases than my wages, I was drowning. Local cops made more after 3yr pay step than I was making as an advanced technical systems architect with 20yrs experience, they retire in 20, collect 85% pay immediately for the rest of their lives with full medical. School board had a similar scam going but they vest with a pension in 3yrs, and most of them were making $300-$700k/yr, they go town to town collecting and stacking those pensions.

So many people are leaving NJ that they slap a 2% mandatory penalty on your home sale before you can leave the state and close the sale. They fine you for leaving their serfdom.
