Capless fuel tanks... is the idea as dumb as it seems?

It seems like most complaints about the capless system come from those who haven’t used it.

I have it and don't trust it, I'm still of the opinion it is just more useless crap being added.
I have added a cap and am glad I have.

The other week, my wife was following me with our F150 and we stopped to get gas. She pulled up to a pump to fuel the F150. Next thing I know she's chewing me out for having lost the cap. After she was done, I politely informed her that the F150 didn't have a cap. The humbling look on her face was priceless!

You can't siphon from capless tanks. Something blocks the hose deep inside the filler neck I guess. But most thieves drill a hole in the bottom of the plastic tanks these days, so the cap/no-cap doesn't matter. Even adding sugar would be difficult with the double flappers, locked without the right sized funnel. Most idiots don't want to work that hard to prank you. :D

you cant siphon from tanks with caps either, they all have a roll over valve in the filler neck - it will let fuel down, but you cannot drop a hose in past it.

No issues with either of my cap less fords ( 2013 2014 ) except I did buy a extra funnel for each of them, loose the clear funnel and your S O L if you try to fill out of a can or put fuel additives in, there are two tabs that have to be pushed at the same time for the little door to open, I tried a few different funnels I had at home just to see If they would work and none of them worked, the clear funnels run about 8-10 dollars apiece, I have only seen them for ford so far but have not looked at any other makes.

No issues with the cap less filler hole on my wife’s Volvo. But, the fuel door did get locked once and wouldn’t unlock. Couldn’t get it open to put gas in the car. Over engineering wins again.

I have it, don't like it, and believe that it may be causing problems; which is why I started this thread.

All of you people who talk about Fords and the door gasket must have missed when I said that GM doesn't have it. The dealer "checked" last week for the sporadically hard starting... I had asked them to check the fuel pressure but instead they checked for codes and didn't find anything. I could have told them that... come to think of it I did.

I'd say the idea of capless isn't as dumb as it seems, but GM's design and execution of it sounds like it might be. I wouldn't like it if there was no seal of some sort. I just figured all brands had something similar to what Ford designed.

Well - - Schazbutt - the Taco Wagon came with a screw in cap on a tether. It also has a manual activated 4WD shift lever. Some of the old ways are still better.

LOL. stupid me, lost my tank cap/
My new cap now has a tether (homemade) so that never happens again.

How lazy can we be that we need to find a way to go without a fuel cap.

Bet the capless design actually costs more
As stated you now need a special funnel if you need to fill the tank manually
If the door has a gasget then we need to plan on replacement of that gasget when it gets a little worn and starts letting stuff in
What do we do when the fuel pump dies and we can no longer drain the tank before dropping it to replace?
? or we could simply add that to the cost and just consider it will now be even more expensive to have the garage fix it
Speaking about cost bet the replacement for the capless filler will be hundreds and hours of work to replace when the check engine comes on instead of that 1.99 fuel cap we just swing by and pick up on the way home.

Like lots of things not worth paying for with new cars this is one to add to the list!
