You used to be able to get a custom saw mill person in to knock out some lumber, but they are few and far between now.
I am not sure if it is the popularity with the smaller saw mills like the Thomas Mills or not, but the custom guys can no longer make a go of it, in what I assume is just a lack of work.
I like having my own sawmill, but only because I can take the junk wood and make something of it. I had 7000 board feet left over last year from a logging operation that would not go to the commercial saw mills, so I sawed that up, and do a lot of odd jobs with it. No real project in mind, just lumber kicking around for whatever reason. I had the mill, but if not, having a custom guy saw it into lumber would have made a lot of sense.
For you, I would think a $2000 Harbor Freight sawmill would work well. They got good reviews. Their tracks are their limiting factor, but that is the easy part to make.
