That is nice. I envy those who have sawmills. It was on my list at one time, but I doubt that it will ever happen.

You used to be able to get a custom saw mill person in to knock out some lumber, but they are few and far between now.

I am not sure if it is the popularity with the smaller saw mills like the Thomas Mills or not, but the custom guys can no longer make a go of it, in what I assume is just a lack of work.

I like having my own sawmill, but only because I can take the junk wood and make something of it. I had 7000 board feet left over last year from a logging operation that would not go to the commercial saw mills, so I sawed that up, and do a lot of odd jobs with it. No real project in mind, just lumber kicking around for whatever reason. I had the mill, but if not, having a custom guy saw it into lumber would have made a lot of sense.

For you, I would think a $2000 Harbor Freight sawmill would work well. They got good reviews. Their tracks are their limiting factor, but that is the easy part to make.

There's a guy down the road from me who bought an old circular mill and set it up, and he charges .25 per foot. However I can sell hemlock for 235$/thousand, and buy what lumber I want, when I need it for 500/thousand having it sawn really isn't that efficient.

Nice vid! When you (is that you) cut those two logs laying side by side I thought that was interesting, never even thought of doing that. And does that saw have a band break on it? I keep hearing it squeal after a pass.

Way back, when we starting our homestead, we also considered getting a mill, but chose instead to have a local guy with one come into cut our logs.
Well, after tailing boards for a couple of days , I decided that he can have the mill; and if and when we need more lumber, I will pay him to saw.
Just not worth the initial expense let alone the noise and dust.
We have had him back a handful of times in the past 30 years and it was totally worth it.
To each their own.
