So what do you use for the 2x4 pockets in that first pic?

I started with all wood stake pocket but due to a design failure I had to modify with steel around the pockets, now I have to more careful with saw. For some reason steel seems to be stronger then wood..........

I did load my trailer up today, only took 2 hr longer then I planned, lots of small lean over trees in the way, used the wrong folks, ended up breaking a strap on the slabs, had to go back to shop to get ratchet straps, then to fine out I was getting low on ratchet straps, just ordered a few more.

Should be enough to last the winter, this is why a real logger need stakes on a trailer.............

Really neat set up! A few months ago I drug some hay wagon running gear out of the neighbor's weed. Going to figure out something similar for my slabs, possibly for bringing logs home from the neighbor's projects.

What did you end up getting? My next choice is probably a Thomas. https://thomasbandsawmills.com/compare-models/

They are quite a step up in price, but I try to avoid Chinese junk- er, stuff.

I went with a Woodmaxx 26e, looks similar to that Thomas 2413. It was about $4250 delivered, included the electric start 14 hp Kohler, the autolube system, adjustable guides, the longer bed which allows me to cut 16 footers, the carriage came pre-assembled which made things easier (I see they charge $650 for that at Thomas). Just out of all the saws I looked at, which I think was all that were available at the time, this one had the best bang for the buck! And I see now they moved everything stateside and make it all here in the US now, and the owner is a vet.

Oh, and the top review on there is me.

Just curious, why the Hudson?

Starting price of $2449 plus $250 shipping, and as near as I can tell it's made in the USA. For a low budget mill I believe it's at least as good as the HF bandsaw.

Definitely made in china, despite how much they try to hide it. I did about 6 months of research on all these little mills before I bought mine in the spring of 2018.

And it is probably about the same thing as a HF mill, but with better back up in case you need parts and stuff. That is where the HF mill loses. Get electric start if you can, you will thank me later for that little tidbit if you buy one!!:D

Hud-Son sawmills are made in Barneveld, NY. They do also sell equipment made by others, but that is not sold under the Hud-Son name: Uniforest Logging Winches are one such example.) Their web page for the "Freedom" line of sawmills (their least expensive mills) mentions "Built in the USA" several times. Their "Why by Hud-Son" page has a video showing a virtual tour of their shop. I've been to their facility n Barneveld, NY. I've not been inside their production shop, but have seen in the open door. There is a lot of fabrication going on in there. They do sell other brands of equipment there (they are the US distributor of Uniforest equipment, for example.) I've sent an email to them to confirm that all of their "Hud-Son" branded equipment is built in the USA. I'll let you know what I hear back.

EDIT: I heard back from Hud-Son - all of their sawmills are built at their Barneveld, NY facility.

Thanks..So you say 3/8 thick.. on the thin edge?

Oh heck no; .375 on the thick edge, and taper down to o on the thin edge, otherwise you would blow through a pile of logs.

Are you sawing them from cedar? A friend went down to one of the pine mills with a tandem trailer and bought enough pine clapboard "seconds" to do her house for not much money. I'm sure that they won't last like cedar would but are good enough for her needs.

I think it's the handling of all boards and stickering that takes the fun out for me, theres no fun in heavy planks either. Even if my mill had more buttons switches and knobs think I still rather haul logs with a tractor............

You need a log loader! That takes a lot of the work out of sawing.

It is used not only in getting the log onto the mill, but the slabs off the mill, and if you plan your cuts right, the sawn lumber off the sawmill. I am getting too old to wrestle the big logs around, so I use the log loader for turning on the sawmill too. It takes more time, but my painless-back is well worth the extra time spent. I will even double-cut my slabs sometimes to make them weigh less.

But I am a one man show on this farm, so everything I do is on me, and me alone!
