I dont call these those filches, I call them slabs, great heat for the garage.

No one here would call them flitches either, they are slabs... Flitches are a plank of wood with the bark edges still on it.

I heat with all of my slab wood, one winter that's all I burned, and the house stayed nice and warm,

(Hopefully, the "picture police" won't come get me, because I'm posting a pict. that wasn't taken yesterday! lol lol)

So on your loading the logs on to your log deck, seems like it would be a pain to get them to the mill from there stacked up like that. I always just load them to my log deck single layer so I can just hand roll them to the saw..

Should be enough to last the winter, this is why a real logger need stakes on a trailer.............

Well according to everything I've ever heard is the flitches are the first cut off the log with the bark on it..

Here is what the google dictionary has to say about it..

Hud-Son sawmills are made in Barneveld, NY. They do also sell equipment made by others, but that is not sold under the Hud-Son name: Uniforest Logging Winches are one such example.) Their web page for the "Freedom" line of sawmills (their least expensive mills) mentions "Built in the USA" several times. Their "Why by Hud-Son" page has a video showing a virtual tour of their shop. I've been to their facility n Barneveld, NY. I've not been inside their production shop, but have seen in the open door. There is a lot of fabrication going on in there. They do sell other brands of equipment there (they are the US distributor of Uniforest equipment, for example.) I've sent an email to them to confirm that all of their "Hud-Son" branded equipment is built in the USA. I'll let you know what I hear back.

EDIT: I heard back from Hud-Son - all of their sawmills are built at their Barneveld, NY facility.

My mistake on the china thing, most of these are and I've deleted all my research notes.. sorry

This is the best picture I have that shows the end. Now that I'm looking at it more closely, I'm wondering if it's ash?

Looks like the ash I have around here. I find the larger ones have that same deep pattern of bark like yours.

Here's the best highest quality American Black Cherry tree/log I've ever milled,

At 20' 6" it was one heck of a log!

The real surprise was inside and as I opened it up,

I could see, this log was full of high grade lumber!

and LOT's of it!

I grade sawed this log, and it was sure worth it!! So, off I go to get it on stickers, you gotta love those nice wide "mostly" clear boards!

Well, there's another "strange post" for puter police to cifer on...

Suddenly it is winter and I felt like a little kid going out to play in the first snow. Getting ready to cut some firewood now that we have snow. We had a vicious little wind storm on Halloween and I have been dealing with softwood blow downs on the woods roads ever since. Some I just have to pull out of the way like this crooked hemlock and a couple like this fir I actually got a couple saw logs from.
