Well I'm looking at your pic, and it all looks like a plank of wood with the bark still on it!

flitch
/fliCH/
noun
noun: flitch; plural noun: flitches; noun: flitch plate; plural noun: flitch plates
1.
a slab of timber cut from a tree trunk, usually from the outside.

Whatever you call them, it makes some pretty good firewood. A rose by any other name, and all of that. ;)
My father used to burn 4 foot lengths in one of his greenhouse boilers. It started out burning coal, was converted to oil, then had a spell of burning wood.

Here's the best highest quality American Black Cherry tree/log I've ever milled,

standard.jpg

At 20' 6" it was one heck of a log!

standard.jpg

The real surprise was inside and as I opened it up,

standard.jpg

I could see, this log was full of high grade lumber!

and LOT's of it!

I grade sawed this log, and it was sure worth it!! So, off I go to get it on stickers, you gotta love those nice wide "mostly" clear boards!

Well, there's another "strange post" for puter police to cifer on...

Looks like the ash I have around here. I find the larger ones have that same deep pattern of bark like yours.

The strange thing is that I have larger ash trees with tighter bark. But if it's not Ash I have no idea what it might be.

I have no idea what it actually is but it looks like chestnut bark to me which seems highly unlikely.

Got some more logs to slice up and I need somewhere to stack the lumber so it was skid building time...

Get it lined up on the floor

side one done, squared, and flipped

Side two done and stickers added

So on your loading the logs on to your log deck, seems like it would be a pain to get them to the mill from there stacked up like that. I always just load them to my log deck single layer so I can just hand roll them to the saw..

Yes but your mill is not in a building........... My building floor is up 20-24", then the mill bed is up 20"-ish, so the wood deck has to match mill bed. When I first got mill the first thing we built is building for it, just dont like a mill out side to the weather, one benefit is I can saw on a rainy day. On big logs where my tractor is on the small side I have to add poles at a 45* angle on the end of deck to roll logs up.

No one here would call them flitches either, they are slabs... Flitches are a plank of wood with the bark edges still on it.

I heat with all of my slab wood, one winter that's all I burned, and the house stayed nice and warm,

(Hopefully, the "picture police" won't come get me, because I'm posting a pict. that wasn't taken yesterday! lol lol)

Well according to everything I've ever heard is the flitches are the first cut off the log with the bark on it..

Here is what the google dictionary has to say about it..

flitch
/fliCH/
noun
noun: flitch; plural noun: flitches; noun: flitch plate; plural noun: flitch plates
1.
a slab of timber cut from a tree trunk, usually from the outside.

Which is just what your picture above shows...
Yup I agree with that, a slab and when bundled up I called it a bundle of slabs...........

I wouldn't be able to get that log off the ground. Now if the boards will stay nice and flat after they're dry, that would be nice.

Sherlock here says these pictures was not taken during summer, no crime I can see, your free to post more pictures............
