Outside air intake

..... whaaaa? My wood stove is hundreds of pounds of solid cast iron. The fire does not, and cannot, escape the stove. My 6" flue is only single wall pipe and yet has NEVER glowed even a tiny bit. As buckeye noted, it would take an actual chimney fire to do that. I only burn dry, seasoned wood, to intentionally have a very hot fire in the stove that burns clean and leaves no creosote accumulation in the chimney pipe that could ignite.

Totally understand if you are not comfortable with a wood stove in your own house; to each their own. But no need to use scare tactics to sway anyone else, as you clearly don't really understand the basic mechanism of safe, stable wood burning stoves. It's very controllable. Sorry for your buddy who burnt his brand new house down, but he must have been doing something very wrong.
I have had the 8" flue on our wood boiler glowing red a few times, it can be done, but it takes a very hot fire.

Nearly lost the Olympia house when the tenants boys had a log roll out of the stove and catch the carpet and wood floor below on fire.

Many things I had thought could never happen I have seen managing rentals for 35 years and often fire related like piling laundry against the water heater or using flue pipes to hang clothes.

Anyone recall the potbellied cast iron stoves fired with coal glowing red on the. Bottom?

Many fires are caused by opening the draft or ash door too far for too long while building a fire. People over draft them to get a hot fire going, and forget to close them. That will glow a flue or stove for sure. But that's probably much less dangerous than a frying pan on the stove that is left unattended (something done in most homes). We all need to use some sense and be responsible for our actions. We can have every possible risk eliminated for us.

I've seen stainless pots on stoves glowing like a fireball and aluminum ones melted... all on electric stove tops as well as instead of 45 seconds on a microwave it is 45 minutes.

"Regulations" seem predisposed to catch the rare inadvertency so as to insurance companies covering all bases. Anything to avoid "litigation". The "catch all" is also there so as to not be accused of discrimination. 4th grade sex education is in place all across the country because of a few inner city hot spots where 11 year olds were getting pregnant. Can't single out the "whys" of that either lest you be accused of racism and discrimination. It is also why 75 year old people in wheel chairs are frisked by airport security lest the middle age man with a beard from the Middle East complain about being profiled. I think Shakespeare had it right. (sorry 2 lane)

Wood stoves are no different. A few nitwit moves was all it took.

When my oldest sibling graduated from 8th grade in 1964 from a very white, very affluent catholic grade school, 4 girls in that class were pregnant. Resentment of sex ed has little to do with race or economics and more to do with religious beliefs and taboo.

Maybe type of construction will change. Concrete and concrete block construction are very common in Europe with often the only structural wood being roof rafters as the roofs are tile or copper.

Ha, had an old pot belly that was rated for coal.
One very cold night I added an extra dose of coal and awoke to a glowing red stove pipe.
I then grabbed a bucket of snow to cool it down and , man, that snow went from solid to vapor and made a wooosh as it exploded.

It however fire proved my home made chimney.

(I had a tinsmith make me a 12 X 12 X 8ft box into which I inserted a 5" X 12 ft length of stove pipe.
, had packed the cavity with vermiculite as insulation thus a home made "patent like chimney)
Back then the $'s were hard to find.

Seems a grease fire in the kitchen would be an equivalent danger. Maybe all kitchens should be in the cellar surrounded by concrete. Being that grease fires are the leading cause of home fires and all.

Grease Fires: Dangerous, Fast-Spreaders - CBS News

People need to have their wits about them when it comes to both kitchens and wood stoves and there will not be a house fire.

IMHO EVERY kitchen should have a handy extinguisher close to the range.
We do, and they even sell then in white.
