China Is Already Winning the Next Great Race in Electric Cars
Extracting metals from spent battery packs will be the key to meeting a surge in demand.

One of my concerns is with the increasing popularity of EV's, who is going to pay for the construction and maintenance of the roadways.
Fuel taxes traditionally support that but will the future take if from general taxation?
If so then every human that pays taxes will be supporting the road infrastructure system.
Including those that don't drive as well as all retirees.

There is but one electricity power grid, not domestic and a second automotive.
Or has this been addressed yet?

IIRC, California already imposes an additional fee for license plate registration for EVs. This is to account for the fact that the owner won't pay gas tax to operate the vehicle.

In the grand scheme of things, I think taxes are one of the simpler problems to work out.

Once we get to the point were there is a good solid user group of EVs on the road then don't be surprised if some genius in the govt come up with a way that group can pay for taxes !! Either through license fees for EVs or toll fees for everyone or similar to the European system were you require a windshield sticker(different style of toll) I can pretty much guarantee that the free ride won't go on forever!

I've heard that idea bantered around... the plan is to put a GPS in every vehicle so that they can tell how far that you drove. Apparently they've never heard of an odometer...

You would think that info would be readily available thru the OBD port. Most states require an annual inspection where the garage plugs into the OBD port to verify that there are no outstanding error codes. Easy enough to log mileage since last inspection and send the owner a bill.
Minimal intrusiveness and/or additional bureaucracy needed.

Your last line speaks volumes about why they would prefer going with GPS. Granted every cell phone already has it, but you can leave that at home or turn it off.

Why not just require a certified odometer reading at each registration renewal.

Are the Chinese going to Electrocute Elephants with a TESLA to Demonstrate how safe the Edisons are?

I'm entirely ignorant on the voltages and electrical systems of today's mainstream EVs...

But I do know that the state of the art (production) golf carts made by Textron ...: RXV series are powered by 48V DC battery packs (L/A or Li ion)...But the power to the motor via the controller is 3 phase AC current...

BTW there are no physical brakes on any of the wheels...all braking is regen...
