40 years ago when I was working the woods, lot of times on a hard wood lot I had to push the chip trucks out with a 540 JD grapple skidder, it's better to do that the blow the rear end out of the truck and truck driver knew just when that 540 made contact with trailer to..... And we didn't stop when it rained good grief if we did that I'd be making $50.00/wk, I prefer a full check 5 days a week rain or shine, sometimes we had a 540 JD on front and one on back pushing and these skidders were full en-closed cabs with heaters, so winter was fun.
Yes, we did that 40 years ago. We did a lot of things differently back then. There are very few truckers who will do that now. It costs more to thrash and tear than to find a job with better roads, or even to stay home.. Back then we also didn't shut an operation down for making a few ruts... heck, the best skid trails were up intermittent streams. Now we flag those same streams to keep the machines out of it, and tell them to find one or two places to cross... if we have a few days of heavy rain the guys stay home.
OTOH you expected a month or more of down time for spring breakup. Now most contractors are able to keep going all spring, albeit in a reduced manner. Those payments ome do every month whether you're working or not, and no matter how far ahead a guy plans it still hurts to take money out of the savings account vs getting a check for working.
