40 years ago when I was working the woods, lot of times on a hard wood lot I had to push the chip trucks out with a 540 JD grapple skidder, it's better to do that the blow the rear end out of the truck and truck driver knew just when that 540 made contact with trailer to..... And we didn't stop when it rained good grief if we did that I'd be making $50.00/wk, I prefer a full check 5 days a week rain or shine, sometimes we had a 540 JD on front and one on back pushing and these skidders were full en-closed cabs with heaters, so winter was fun.

Yes, we did that 40 years ago. We did a lot of things differently back then. There are very few truckers who will do that now. It costs more to thrash and tear than to find a job with better roads, or even to stay home.. Back then we also didn't shut an operation down for making a few ruts... heck, the best skid trails were up intermittent streams. Now we flag those same streams to keep the machines out of it, and tell them to find one or two places to cross... if we have a few days of heavy rain the guys stay home.

OTOH you expected a month or more of down time for spring breakup. Now most contractors are able to keep going all spring, albeit in a reduced manner. Those payments ome do every month whether you're working or not, and no matter how far ahead a guy plans it still hurts to take money out of the savings account vs getting a check for working.

IMO, flip caps - either Stihl or Husqvarna design were a solution in search of a problem. I never had problems with the old screw-in caps (and rarely needed a tool to unscrew them). The only issue was when I forgot to put them back on in the first place. I suspect the flip caps haven't solved that issue.

I disagree those caps can sometime come off hard for me, I dont like chasing tools, on my 550xp it's one less tool I have to use just to add oil and gas, just flip the lever up and instantly have a something to grab hold of.

The one thing I’ve noticed over the years is that there is NO reality on reality TV shows

Well one thing I like about Goodson logging even when they was on tv 8 years ago, it was mostly a team effort and still is, not this constant hollering and swearing at each other like I seen on other shows and I still like seeing big equipment working or breaking now and then. Also I like seeing father and son still be able to work together, lots of times when working with my son I just point and mention something and he knows exactly what I want.

So where did you get your measuring "stick"? I want one...

I like the easy on and off, it's very flexible.

This was my version of a cutting gauge for years. It was made of an old wire coat hangar and some zip ties (a length of similar diameter spring wire would have been better than the coat hangar). The idea came from a commercially available product which is no longer made. I liked it because it stowed up against the body of the saw when not in use, and it was always there, ready to be flipped out for use. Nothing to remember to bring with me.

I would have loved to find the commercially made version of this. The attachment method was a lot more durable than my version:

Triple post! that has to be a record! :D It's still a good idea, I'm sure that if you thought about it you would come up with a more durable way.
I can't be the only one who remember 4 foot tails on the end of the saw for cutting pulpwood.

WOW.. I got your point... THRICE!!

Looks good though, might try it.. If I don't like it .. nothing lost!

I now have a measuring stick and a rattle can of paint, works ok, but adds another step in the process..

Serious internet problems here today. Pages not loading, emails not going through, etc. Apparently, some of the "submit" buttons I clicked actually worked, despite appearances at the time. I'll delete a couple of them.

I agree, very simple. Back when it took some getting used to, but now they are easy peasy foolproof on my Stihls. Back up at 2, turn to 6. Tug, fold down. The Stihl backpack blower has the raised ridge twist cap, it is easy as well.

Thanks, so you must like it seeing that you use it..yes?

I use it everytime I cut up firewood if I dont my 16" fast becomes 24" wood, it comes with two unbreakable rods if you want one for a longer length or in case you loose one. I do think the air chuck nut is a little on the long side so I cut off a 1/4" of it as square as I could.
