WOW.. I got your point... THRICE!!

Looks good though, might try it.. If I don't like it .. nothing lost!

I now have a measuring stick and a rattle can of paint, works ok, but adds another step in the process..
John-mac setup is good to. I use a 4' measuring stick on logs but on firewood no way and I'd throw the paint can in the woods after I shot it.

And that firewood measurer that is held on by a magnet to the bar, I wouldn't like either but I wouldn't throw it away, I'd loose in the wood pile on every cut after I hit it 19 times with the saw chain............

I agree, very simple. Back when it took some getting used to, but now they are easy peasy foolproof on my Stihls. Back up at 2, turn to 6. Tug, fold down. The Stihl backpack blower has the raised ridge twist cap, it is easy as well.

The newer Stihls have also improved their on/off switch, it's like the huskys, move to shut off and the switch is always on, my sons new MS 261 is like that.

Those look like good ideas!

I cut my wood to 18”. My bar is 18” (pretty close) So I just use my bar as a guide on the larger logs that will be split to keep the size consistent. On smaller pieces, I just eyeball it as close as I can and I always end up with a 12” piece when I get to the end of the branch. It burns too.

I got tired of the saw twist motion every few cuts when using the bar as a gauge to verify I'm still on target. You almost have to use poor body mechanics to do it, and I found I often did not return to proper body mechanics when rotating it back to make the cut. I've got neck and upper back issues already (related to an old wrestling injury), and using poor body mechanics aggravates it - usually resulting in a trip or two to the chiropractor (my wife is a physical therapist, but she's gotten tired of fixing me, especially when the injury came about from doing things she's been warning me not to do for a couple of decades now).

Cheapest gauge I've found: grab a stick in my left hand along with the front handle of the saw, with enough stick hanging over whichever side I want to measure from to align with a 16" cut.

Anyone ever look at two completely different machines that do basically the same thing and end up scratching your head, I like this one because, no I like that because.... Well I watched quite a few firewood splitters and processes but these two slipped under my radar and as I watched them both I go gee wizz witch one would I pick if I was going to buy one, I keep going back and forth, but I think I'm leaning towards the vertical one, IF I was going to buy one...........

Very clever idea. The cheapskate in me may adapt to using this. And I can use the bar one time to measure the stick.

Those are a couple of very interesting splitters OP. Thanks for posting. To me the vertical looks faster but more work maybe to make it fast. I would like to see both handle some wood with more of a twisted grain. Oak is easy.

I have my wife ahead of me with a measuring stick and a piece of chalk.

I had a few trees come down along one of the pastures. I started to cut in place, then thought it would be easier to haul them closer in.

An aspen tree that should've been cut down five years ago, green grass, seagulls flying overhead, and the widest picture I ever seen...........
