It is Sugar Maple or Hard Maple like OldPath says. I usually prefer to let them grow but this one didn't have a live branch on it. The top was a skeleton of broken off stubs with a big old ravens nest in a main crotch. There might be a #2 log in there if the scaler is in the right mood and 3 pallet logs by my eye. It would be nice to have a mill to play with on logs like that. I think the pallet logs would make some interestingly figured boards with that rumpled looking bottom log.

Yeah, my only experience with "lumber logs" is with my little mill, other than buying lumber from one, I've never dealt with a mill.

I obviously don't "grade" my logs, just open them up and see what I get.. and those two look to me like they would make some great looking lumber!

Looks like 3 pallet logs to me too.
I guess if you have a relationship with the mill you might get a grade bump up.

Pallet logs don’t bring any money. Like $200 per thousand feet here. Those 2 logs might bring $30 total. Unless pallet logs are worth a lot more there Id firewood them.

Here we have a good market for timber mat logs. Hardwood, straight and sound to a 10" top, I can get 375$/thousand delivered to the local log yard. It doesn't matter how many knots. Rock maple pallet logs to the same yard are 350$/thousand. Figuring 2 cords of wood per thousand comes to about 175$/cord but you don't need to cut and split it.

Of course how generous the scaler is ties directly to how hungry the mill is for wood.

Some rock maple around my neck of the woods may come with free pre drilled holes..........

Figured wood!

I cut one of my tapping trees a few years ago for somebody who wanted to build a "20 year" plaque for a friend of mine. It was kind of disappointing once he sawed it out, we were hoping for some stain as well as the tap holes but the 5/16 inch taps I use heal up too fast.

I would've thought the holes would heal over not healed up, but least no metal spiles was hit when sawing.

I only use plastic spiles. Within a couple of years it's hard to see where I drilled, now that I use the smaller taps.

I loaded up my slab scoot this afternoon and have the top bundle ratchet strapped and ready to cut up tomorrow afternoon.
