Are these Projector type Headlights or Standard Bulb type ?

LEDsideView.jpg
I'm using H4 replacement LED "bulbs" Grev. I chose this particular one because it uses two LEDs instead of one, so there's no fooling around with shutters or solenoids to get the correct position for the high and low beam emitters. They also use heavy copper braid to cool the LEDs instead of a fan, which will work better inside a headlight shell, but still aren't optimal. But they seem OK on an even smaller shell on the other bike, so don't think they'll be a heading issue. The LEDs also draw less current than the incandescents the bike's wiring harness was designed to handle, so relays aren't needed, either. Back in the bad old days of 100W halogen bulbs, I put relays in place to handle the extra current, mainly to save the contacts in the handlebar switches. So there's another advantage to using LEDs. What I haven't done, though, is compare the distance from the adaptor mounting flange to the LEDs to the same distance on an H4 bulb. If they're different, I'll have to make further alterations to get the beam pattern closer to what Bosch intended. So that's on the agenda for today.

Aside from the shield issue, the LEDs were drop ins on the van, and I've had very good results with these particular lamps on another motorcycle as well. But I suspect this batch has been monkeyed with by the manufacturer, and then sold under the same part number/name. My first clue was when the plastic adaptor ring to mount the lamp in the H4 opening in the reflector had to have the three tabs around the edges narrowed and shortened to fit. Easy enough to do, but really shouldn't need to do that, as the H4 standard has been around for years and years. The lamp fits into the center of the adaptor using two cam lock type pins, one wider than the other so only one orientation is possible, but I think they are off by 180°. I tried flipping the adaptor over, but the clip that holds it in place wouldn't reach the retaining hooks, and the slots for the two cam pins don't go all the way through to the other side. That would also have moved the lamp toward the back of the headlight shell, changing the position of the two LEDs, which would also change the beam pattern.

Removing the shield made a big improvement in the pattern, and put a lot more light on the road as well. On low beam, I get a narrow spot. When I flip on the high beam, I get a much broader pattern in closer to the headlamp, and the low beam stays on. I'm now also seeing the cutoffs on the top and sides, but only when that second LED comes on. That is pretty much the opposite of what should be happening. I could reverse the high/low leads on the lamp connector, but I really don't want to alter the factory wiring to fix a problem caused by the LED lamp. So once I get the lamp out, I'll take another look at that adaptor and see what makes the most sense.

This is the real deal. Paco was head bobbing and throat extending all morning marking his throne, marking his territory, and soliciting for female companionship in true iguana fashion. And his efforts were rewarded with a female who climbed all over him and rested by his side.

That's funny, Jay. The little fence lizards do much the same thing out here. But there's a lot more chasing involved, with the males doing most of the leg work. I have yet to see a pair, er, engaged.

That's not the case with the baboons a motorcycle tour group I'm following encountered in South Africa. Theyve been down there for five weeks, and this is right at the end of their stay. On a boat tour they came across a troop, and every other shot shows a pair having "fun". Kinda surprised Facebook hasn't redacted some of those photos. But no complaints of monkey shines, either, so maybe you could find a boat tour to keep you and the monkeys safely separated.:laughing:

25° and calm' had a dusting of snow this morning, cold night, cold day tomorrow, then warming Friday. Mild weekend, then up and down. Not sure what expect after that.
Dinner with friends tonight, always a good time. Then a run to Tractor Supply for critter foods, got gas, but forgot the Target gift card swap for my grandson. I’ll do it tomorrow so I don’t have to deal with it next week. Need to visit mom as well.

Good evening all. 29F for the start, clear, light wind. Cloud cover like a yo-yo today, cloud up, clear off and repeat, Wind almost moderate, found 1/2 rain from the other day frozen solid. High temp for the day was 51F. Dig coals from ashes and rescue fire, Men's meeting, rebuild fire. Bike ride, walk dog, and conserve energy for rest of day. Wife decided 5 ton electric splitter was in order for Christmas, it is hiding in garage now. Scooter is doing fine , does not like cone, and snapped at wife before he got his pain pill.

Looking more and more like a white Christmas for you, Bill. Tell you what, if we get any snow headed this way, I'll do my best to reroute it your way instead, OK?

Drizzly rain here all day, but with enough breaks to stay dry picking up the mail and removing some batteries. Surprised a bald eagle roosting in one of the big pines, happy to see him, and hopefully his mate, sticking around here for the winter. Rain doesn't seem to bother the deer at all, and now the bucks are banding up. Four in the back yard yesterday, none older than a year or two, all dumber than posts. Yep, wrong year to not buy a tag...
