I'm happy with my WOODS.

Woods has good products. No argue. However, they use very low carbon steel and paint quality of them is not really good. (according to my experience)

Mine sits outside, has been for years, paint is holding up good. Haven't had any issues with any metal failure either.

They sell the same products for years because they are good products. Why improve something if it doesn't need it? A cutter is such a simple design and has a simple function. If you think you can make a better one for cheaper with cheap replacement parts by all means make it. Stop talking about it and do it.

I am happy with my KingKutter, but as I stated earlier, the approach angle of the front skid is too steep and digs in on uneven ground (which is where rough cut mowers are used). I wrote to Kingkutter and offered that suggestion. Basically, I got a response that was a pat on the head - maybe we'll change it some day. To date, nothing's changed. This is not an indictment of Kingkutter - I still (mostly) like mine. That said, there have been many good suggestions on this thread. How many have been implemented on existing brands?

I hope you can get a great cutter made at a great cost! I would be one of the first to buy one if you do! There is always something that has to be sacrificed in order to make a profit.
Low profit margin, but very high volume of sales= profit.
High profit margin, but low volume sales=profit.

To find that balance is difficult at best .... How many mowers does one person buy? Probably only one if they are happy with it and it is well built to last a long time. How will you maintain high sales margins in order to be profitable?

A thought on a feature that I would want is adjustable gauge wheels on all 4 corners (not sure if that was mentioned before). Also easy access to change/sharpen blades. Thanks for your research.

Add a rubber cover that keeps water from landing on the gearbox, driveline, U joint and possibly clutch. Just a simple thing that attaches to the two arms from the center link to the rear with a little upward bow to it.

Something to think about chain guard wise. I ran a loftness flail mower that used 6" plates of steel instead of chains. These did a way better job of stopping projectiles than the chains thought of. I'm not sure how much it would cost to do the plates vs chains but I would prefer plates over chains.

I've noticed this when shopping for used rotary mowers the blade circle indented from the bottom of the mower onto the top. Not sure what causes this but likely from thin gauge sheet metal on the top. My recommendation would be to not skimp on the sheet metal. also maybe some vertical reinforcement on the front corners by the skids to keep them from getting turned in. I'm just thinking out loud but these are things that I see from shopping used units. Something that holds up to a beating will likely hold its value much better. Similar how bush hog brand seems to be held higher in expectations than others.

Hey,

Did you see the Woods's new rotary cutters ? There are some improvements. On the other hand they have removed rear bumper and put a z channel instead of that. What we are talking here is so important. As you can see they have add real rep. skid shoes which will not dig the ground. Support wheel connection easier than before.

:D Nope. Removing rear bumper is not a good idea. Seems like they have tried to decrease costs. Their new designs are not good as their old designs as a structure.
