Material for Porch Ceiling

I'm a huge fan of Hardi products, but hate using them for porch ceilings. Or any ceiling. They are too brittle, heavy and difficult to install on a ceiling. Look at Smart products. Lowes and Home Depot are now carrying them. Basically it's a high quality OSB with a wood grain finish that paints well, cuts easy and installs super easy!!! I don't think Smart Siding is as good as Hardi for siding, but for ceilings that are protected from the elements, it's ideal.

Thanks. I will definitely take a look at the Smart products. Any idea on costs?

I just did my bathroom ceiling with PVC tongue and groove boards. Came out really nice and very easy to cut and nail. Would be perfect for a porch, and if you want white, no painting needed. Got mine at Home Depot.

I have the Hardi-panel with woodgrain finish on the ceiling of my porches and it looks nice even after 10 years. I used Hardi products under eaves also. No more rotting boards for me and so far no peeling paint.
Pay once and forget it or go cheap and pay forever.

What about using solid vinyl soffit or if you wanted/needed some ventilation up there you could throw up some vented soffit. No treatment, no maintenance, light, easy to put up

Surprised no-one has mentioned this yet actually. I used aluminum soffit under my house porch. Worked great, super light, literally zero maintenance. Just hose it off with some soapy water and it's done.

Thanks for the responses. I plan to take a look at the Hardi and Smart products soon. I have Hardi siding on my shop I build 11 years ago and it has held up perfect. I like the idea of the Smart sidings’ weight as my help is limited.

I am reviving this thread. It rained this weekend so I spent a little time looking at materials. I have narrowed it down to either 1x6 v grove tongue and groove wood or LP Smart Panel. The tongue and groove will be about $100 more but I think it will have more of a cabin look. Thoughts?
