The Wife and I really enjoy feeding the birds and the Gray-Jays will carry off anything, even chicken bones. Most of these morsels of food are stored in the branches of spruce trees. When we pressure cook the bones to mush, the birds will still haul them away but they are easier to eat.

I would be very careful of giving a dog any kind of bird bones (I would not) . . . splinters come to mind no matter how you process them . . . :)

I wouldn't take the chance either, but I remember looking this up long ago trying to understand why wild animals can kill and eat birds, chickens, etc, without the risk.

Very true Ford, wild, they are hungry . . . and mine sure are not wild or used to being hungry. :confused3: each to their own. ;)

It apparently has to do whether the bones are cooked or not.

Click on the link Doofy posted, watch the video and read the lower posts. We cook up a lot of whole chickens (probably 2 a week) and we cannot use the amount of soup and broth that could be created from 2 carcasses a week. So I end up tossing most of the bones into the yard waste at the transfer station (yes, they take food scraps in yard waste there). That is such a waste when I could be softening up the bones, creating bone broth infused with marrow, cartilage and bits of meat. Maybe toss in carrots and oatmeal, sweet potato, etc. and get some nearly free dog food out of it.

My guess is that chicken bones from baked chickens dry out in the oven and get brittle from being dried out. Dogs naturally want to chew bones, probably to get that yummy marrow. But, particularly as they get older, that can lead to broken teeth so I do not allow it.

Oh, and my dogs ARE family.

Our Beagle just finished gnawing some ham knuckles that were softened in the pressure cooker. These were not turned to mush but softened enough to be safe(no sharp edges or splinters).

My wife looked at a pork chop instant pot recipe and determined it was too much trouble. Now she’s trying to decide where to store it, which means it won’t get used.

Hard boiled eggs! 5-5-5 method. 5 minutes pressure, 5 minutes slow pressure release and 5 minutes in ice water.

These are "Fresh" chicken eggs that are notoriously hard to peel and they peeled perfectly.

Now, wife is making Goulash for Dinner! Win-Win for us!

Didn't men used to wear those over their shoes in winter? I remember the sign in the Doctors Office "Please Remove Rubbers".
