Movable Shooting Backstop.

This is my target stand for shooting. The pic shows up small for some reason but is 2.5' wide and 6' high. The bullets blow through it and hit a hill or lawn in a wooded safe area. I have a wooded 75' foot hill on both sides of the lawn. One side has houses on top.

It works fine so far but I want to try something different and just want a couple ideas. I planned on cutting railroad ties in 3' chunks and stack them up to 6' high and bolt them onto one side of this stand. This way I can still move it around to get different view like next to the driveway of farther away from the house etc. This helps spotting for range but I can still shoot from a place easier to pick up the brass. No matter the location I will not have it even remotely toward a house.

I know for the first few hundred rounds in a relatively small area will be fine but what about when lead starts piling up. Do I need to worry about bullets bouncing off and coming back.

What would work better is to get some of the large nylon totes bags and fill with sand. Then stack these for your backstop. Ties could cause ricochet when embedded bullets hit one another. Depending on rounds going down range, speeds could be 2700fps plus! Better to have earthen backstop that could be raked and scaped every so often.

Traps are good. Building a swinging target may be easier. This is a .45 Colt 250 grain bullet that hit my swinging target and dropped to the ground.

Maybe I missed it but what firearm(s) are you shooting? Big difference between a 9mm and a .300 Win Mag.

I don't have pics handy but I built one that is about 4' tall X 8' wide. It's made with 2x6 framing so that the inside is hollow, 5.25" deep. Both sides are finished with 3/4" treated plywood. But, the front first has 1" rubber horse-stall matting attached to the frame, then the plywood. The interior of the frame is filled with sand.

The front plywood holds targets (stapled) and the rubber mat reseals the bullet hole after is passes thru. The sand has stopped almost everything I've thrown at it.

My idea of a backstop is something you would feel safe putting your wife and kids behind when you shoot at it. Something that has no chance of passing whatever round you plan on shooting at it. Anything less, and you don't really have a backstop at all. It should have great side protection, too.

I only shoot .22 here mostly, steel target plinking, my backstop is a big tree stump which I didn't bother digging out of the ground. I'm planning to reinforce it with more tree stumps which I got lying around, gonna make a "u" shape with them.

I shoot shotguns, 22, 9mm, 45s, 30-30. Nothing monstrous.

That sounds like a good idea.
