Rural car wreck

Thanks. Sorry to interrupt the thread. I'm not too familiar with that part of the state. Thanks.

I also live on a rural road. Unless posted the speed is 55 mph in Illinois on these roads. There are places you can go that fast but most places I drive 45 to 50 mph. I see a lot of people going 60 or faster. Usually just people passing through.

Pretty brutal car crash. I think a lot of us have seen these in the past and would just as soon forget them.

Yeah. I had a friend that was an ambulance driver in the 60's and 70's. Back when cars didn't crumple or have airbags. He saw a lot of, for lack of better term, mangled bodies. There's an old RR grade on our property that crosses a highway between two hills. About the worst place you could ever put a RR crossing on a highway. He said he pulled multiple people out of multiple cars that hit the trains over the years. Yikes.

Gosh, this thread is pretty depressing. Condolences to all of y'all who have had to witness such a tragic event, or lose someone close to you. I think I would have some serious PTSD from seeing something so horrific.

Life is fragile, treasure every bit of it that you can.

I grew up in the country but close to a main highway. I've seen three decapitations. Two guys in a jeep on night passed me, both with wine bottles turned up. They went under a tractor trailer that was crossing the road, they were doing about 60mph I'm guessing. A few years ago there's a fellow and his wife who do landscaping work in this area, we invited them in for sodas. I told them where I grew up, and the fellow's wife started telling me about how her brother died in a car accident out that way years ago, but the police never told the family details. Intuitively I thought that was it and explained how it happened after they passed me. After telling the story I felt terrible, of course she was crying but she said she appreciated it and wanted to know.
In 1969 I was at a friend's house one night when a fire truck went flying past. We followed in his Dad's '61 Galaxy down this long secondary road at times doing 110. At the scene there was a new Dodge Dart Swinger on it's roof burning, beer cans scattered around. The driver missed a sharp curve going through wooden railing on a bridge. They had the dead driver out, apparently not knowing if other passengers. After a while they had the fire out, opened door and three guys inside which they removed. Worse that any horror movie I've ever seen and by then a small crowd of people had gathered. I'll never forget the crowds screaming.
One of the worst my wife saw as a young teenager a guy running a stop sign in an MG convertible, decapitated when he went under a truck. She said the body still in the car, holding steering wheel, body was shaking. The head was facing it's body...appeared to be trying to talk, eyes blinking. She said several onlookers fainted!
I've had my share of bicycle, motorcycle, car accidents and lucky to be alive.

Had one near home yesterday, long narrow stretch of road, SUV tried to overtake two cars and ran head on into a semi, I was on the same stretch about 15 minutes earlier and daughter heard about it on the radio, Silver SUV=Dad, I was buying fuel and left my phone in the car when she tried to call me, did not help her any.

I saw an sl0 Blazer that had tried to pass a right turning tractor trailer in the breakdown lane... it was on it's side under the trailer which still had all wheels on the ground. Miraculously the guy survived, and hopefully learned from his mistake.

I feel bad for our kids in regards to phones. Great asset. Can also be a great detriment. I repeatedly tell my kids if you don't get me the first attempt don't freak out. I may be on the tractor and didn't hear it. Leave a message and try again a few minutes later. Only come running if you can't get me after a couple hours of trying. Probably (hopefully) isn't going to matter if it's bad. I don't want my kids to be in a situation where they try to keep me alive when it's hopeless. I don't wish them having to live with that.

You and I, as well as everyone reading this, are an eye blink away from eternity.

I called a friend on his cell about a year ago, and when a person answered and identified himself as a Missouri State Highway Patrolman, I knew it wasn't good. Friend was just about to dust off on the helicopter life flight to the regional trauma center. Seems a Deuce and a half delivery truck decided to turn left right in front of his motorcycle. and he went under the truck and the rear duals stopped a couple inches from his melon. He spent some time in the hospital while they added some extra hardware to his leg, and some time in rehab. He is lucky to be alive and he knows it. The Harley was "toast". He has recovered amazingly well. A week ago I helped him take down a 90 foot radio tower. He was the tower man, I was the ground man. The leg bothers him some still, but is pretty functional. The road rash photos alone were pretty gruesome. I saw some site photos someone took of him pinned up under the truck, that didn't look too good either. Fortunately there was a nurse on the way to work that stopped to assist. He is never going to pass a metal detector test any more though.. :)

I was just commenting to the wife last weekend that our state law about not touching your phone when driving (also eating, etc.) is a good thing. It took some getting used to but I no longer feel obligated to answer the phone when driving, even hands free (excluding an emergency). It is just too distracting.
