Rural car wreck

I was just commenting to the wife last weekend that our state law about not touching your phone when driving (also eating, etc.) is a good thing. It took some getting used to but I no longer feel obligated to answer the phone when driving, even hands free (excluding an emergency). It is just too distracting.

Missouri just went under that law. If I remember to take my phone out of my pants pocket before I start driving I'll answer it. I won't dig it out of my pocket. I won't even attempt to read or write text.

I was told that went into effect here this year also.

We have had that for a number of years, it applies to operating any device whilst driving, driving includes stationary at traffic signals with engine running but does not apply (yet) to hands free devices, my hands free operates from controls on the wheel and dialing is voice operated for stored numbers.
It also extends to eating, and drinking any alcoholic beverage whilst driving even if under the prescribed limit, to take it a step further if you have Fido with you he must be in a harness and secured to a seatbelt or secured in the rear of a vehicle.
I an not aware of any laws that prevent vain females from applying makeup whilst driving but sure they could get you for inattentive driving, same for shaving.
Police have been known to sit on buses watching drivers and radioing in offenders who get picked up just up the road, they have also been cunning and posed as window washers at lights and grab a few.

We have the no texting while driving law now and a no distracted driving law which means no hand held phone use. I've read about people watching videos on their phones while driving lately. Our gravel road with only 6 houses on it was pretty quiet 20 years ago, but now we get our share of traffic and people fly down this road, and since there is no posted speed limit the speed limit is 55mph. We seen our share of nasty vehicle crashes resulting in death and the helicopter landing in the crop field to the west of us. There is the two lane blacktop road to the west about 3/8 a mile across that field where our dirt road ends and that section of the blacktop road is an "S" curve. Well 20-25 years ago the blacktop road was a washboard and more times than I care to say there would be a head on collision there were someone lost it in that curve and crossed the line. I've been down there more than once with a crow bar getting people out They finally fixed that stretch of road softened the curves, repaved it and even added bike lanes and lowered the speed limit to 40MPH for that curve.

A couple year back I son lost a friend in a single vehicle motorcycle accident along a 2 lane blacktop road with woods along both sides for a few miles and it took them 3 days to find him before they knew actually what happened to him and they were looking for him. It appear he was out riding around by himself and lost it, put that bike through the ditch hit the trees and it killed him.

I'm often tempted to fix that annoying cell phone with an anvil and sledge hammer.

The statistics show hands free phones are no safer than the handheld models , but they are harder to ticket

Yeah, in regards to mental focus they probably aren't any safer. I believe they are safer in regards to hand function.
