How many hours is a lot of hours...?

To be more specific, is was asking mainly about engine life. Cummins motors in heavy equipment they recommend rebuild around 6000 hours, for example

That's why I made my last statement above.

If you read enough forums etc...you hear that about 2500 hours for the little (16-25 HP) 3 cyl diesels is when they may start to smoke or throw some blow-by...but in the same respect I've seen some smaller 3 cylinder air cooled diesels (40+/- HP) with three times that many hours still running smooth...

I’ve heard it said that with cars one mile of city driving is equivalent to ten miles of highway driving. So a car with low miles but all in New York City could be worse off than a car with high miles from west Texas that only has highway miles on it.

As a previous poster noted, a lot depends on how those hours were put in the tractor.

I would think the average user may put 75-125 hours per year on a tractor(if used year round). So the year x say 100 hrs.would be average use.Conditon and maintenance also comes into play.
Mine is right on the formula;1300 hours in ten years.
Recently heard of a very similar tractor as mine with 8,000 hours;I would guess used commercially.

What is considered lots of hours is more to do with the manufacturing process than how it's used or maintained.

I've often thought a total fuel used meter/ recorder would be more accurate than a just an hour meter to tell where a engine is on the life used/ life left scale. Have yet to see one though.

I have never been able to use a tractor enough to wear one out but at work we have worn out a couple of forklifts one with a 4 cylinder perkins diesel it was still doing a 45 hours every week when we sold it but getting slower at 22,000 engine hours and another forklift with a ford 5000 tractor engine went 15,000 hours and is now just a standby machine getting occasional use

As others have stated.....hours are just the first of many questions to be answered.

Hours are inconsequential if the unit is maintained properly. If beat on, no. Bought another M9 last spring with 3500 on the meter, everything is tight and right. I seem to be collecting them.

My rule of thumb is that 8,000 hours on a tractor is like 200,000 on a car. You have to consider how it's been taken care of or abused, but that's also the same with a car.

Most rental yards get rid of their tractors at 2,000 hours, which fits with car rental companies getting rid of their fleet at 50,000 miles.

Small compact tractors don't get used enough to really wear out, they fall apart more from just sitting around for so much of the time out in the elements.

You know any rental unit will be run hard and put away wet numerous times. 2000 is like 20,000 in a private owner's hands.
