Can a tear in a vinyl seat be stitched?

Greetings,

I have a vinyl seat that has a tear in it about 3 inches in length. The seat has started to separate in this area as well so to fix it it will have to be "stitched" back together. Has anyone done this with success by hand? I was going to use this seat on a piece of equipment that gets very little use to buy some time until a new seat can be purchased.

I have a product called VLP which is for vinyl and leather repair. I was thinking about stitching the crack then applying a fiberglass patch over the top of the stitch and adhere it together using the VLP. What would be a good product for stitching a vinyl seat?

It's better to patch it from the backside with a backer fabric. You can poke it in from the frontside. Watch this video for ideas.

I had a vinyl seat in a Jeep that ripped about 3 inches long, there was a second tear about an inch away, running parallel to the first. I found some heavy vinyl patch kit for pool liners. I glued a piece under the tears, and another piece over them. It helped up for about 2 years, getting in and out of the seat multiple times a day. You can probably find the kits on eBay or amazon.

I would go to Lowes and buy a roll of Zip Tape for $26 and use that to cover the tear. It's water proof tape that is just about impossible to remove. Then you will still have most of the roll left, and it's the best tape that you will ever find!!!!

I've been using zip tape to repair torn round silage bales. You cannot remove the tape no matter how hard you try. Seems to last forever...much better than the duct tape we used to use.

How does it stand up to gasoline? My electrical tape patch on the hole a squirrel chowed in the plastic spout for my gas can comes loose every couple of years. Would this work better?

I have an atv that had tear in the seat. I pulled some of the staples to access the underside of the upholstery and glued a patch to the underside. I made this repair 15 or so years ago. It has held up great and looks pretty good. On my JD lawnmower the foam and vinyl are fused together. Each year it gets a fresh layer of yellow duct tape.
