Deere 997 zero turn Yanmar diesel valve adjustment

Hello all,
Looking for some help with my 2006 Deere 997 zero turn, I bought it used a few years ago and have accumulated about 2200 hrs on it. While its down for the winter I'd like to do some PM work, specifically adjust the valves. If anyone has some guidance on how to set TDC and how to proceed I would greatly appreciate it. I have looked in the owners manual and have found the clearances (intake/exhaust) both to be .002-.003".

I did it a few times on the 240D in the 25 years we owned it and a couple times on the 220D. Use a wrench on the pulley at the radiator end of the engine to turn the crankshaft or good tension on the fan belt and just use the fan blades. That's what I did on the 240D because getting at its nut on the pulley wasn't as easy.

Just watch the valves re what they're doing. All you need is for both to be closed when checking the clearance. Find the firing order. Once you find the 1st one, you'll then know which one will be next.

Dad used to do mechanical valves while the engine is running. It's dicey. Think most recommend doing them cold.

Wanted to thank everyone for their help, I had some time this weekend and went ahead and adjusted the valves. Valves were a tad loose at .009-.010", I read in the operators manual they should be .002-.003". Adjusted to .003" and fired right up. Can't really tell much of a difference in sound but at least I know its where its supposed to be. Now if I can just chase down my intermittent shut-down problem...
