That must be local or a Great Lakes thing, because riding in cars on ferries is common. In some places they want you in your car instead of wandering around on deck.


There are some pictures n some of the news stories of 'the car' that show net barriers in place. But I still don't see how this happened, nets or no nets. Wasn't it in Park? Didn't it have brakes? Those ferries don't start or stop suddenly enough to cause a vehicle to shift.

It's been a while, but I've been on a ferry where the cars moved because the seas were so rough. Scary stuff. I was happy to have only a bicycle, and that I was was only on deck getting on and off.

I have seen them used several times back in the 70s when I first started driving trucks. Modern trucks have better brakes and engines brakes. That guy was going too fast to start with. There is a reason they post downhill truck speeds. The trailer brakes were smoking so he didn't loose the trailer service line. I haven't seen a truck in one for years but have seen with tire tracks that were not yet smoothed out.

Hopefully that ferry is 'Out of Service', at least until the water calms down. Scary? Yes!

I like the wood blocking to support it while the tractor/loader/backhoe sits on it.

I suspect that they do that to keep the trailer from dropping when loading... notice the ramps don't have the drops to support it for that purpose. (Most car carriers don't.) It's half the price of a new one around here, assuming that it hasn't been racked from being overloaded it might be a good trailer even if you do need to replace the brakes.
