Half of pto shaft turns

Junk get a new one ....:2cents:
I agree, in the picture with the OP's hand near the end of the female side of the PTO shaft, the weld a couple inches in from the end of the hand is where the square part of the PTO shaft stops. After that it is a round tube.
I would remove it from the implement, take it down to Tractor Supply or whatever your local farm supply store is and get one that matches it on both ends.
If you can take a picture of where attaches to the cutter and a measurement of the shaft, we can probably point you towards a similar shaft.

Thanks for the help guys

No question that shaft is toast.

Make sure you cut the new pto shaft to the correct length or you will break the tractor or mower when you lift it up....

Believe most PTO outputs are 1-3/8 by 6 splines (use visual and ruler) main thing to be sure cutter end of shaft will mated to cutter gearbox...

They are pretty generic and almost any tractor/farm supply should have generic replacement, all you care about is if there is enough length in new shaft so you can cut it to proper length...

Yes, the tractor and will be an 1 3/8” 6 spline. The key is making sure that you have the right size on the other end. There are a couple different sizes that they could be, some have the same 1 3/8” 6 spline as a tractor, others have a smooth shaft that you put the shear pin through and you put a retaining clip on the front of the shaft. Others have a shear pin built into the implement end of the PTO shaft and you use a heavier non sharing pin to attach the PTO shaft to the implement.

Thanks I'm gonna take it off in the morning and head to tractor supply or rural king. It has a shear pin going through it and looks to be the same as the tractor end one could only hope.

Before you discard the old shaft, hook it to the mower and tractor and measure it.

Measure from the center of a knuckle to center of a knuckle or end to end. It doesn't matter which..
When you find a new shaft with the proper ends, make sure it measures that measurement with a minimum of 8-10" of overlap. If it has more overlap than that, then you can cut the shaft as needed, like in the instructions given..

That is how I would go about it..

I have a 6 spline on the tractor and smooth 1 3/8 on tractor end when measuring from center to yoke on each I get 39 when measuring from shear pin to shear pin attached to tractor I get 37 with 8 inches of overlap. Should I look for a pto in the 37 to 40 inch range and cut as needed?
