Market corrections with big swings on the downside are mostly due to automated trading triggers and GTC stop loss orders...there is very little if any manipulation or machinations going on...

A good time to close short positions...!

... One thing that I do know is not to check my 401K in times like this.
The Coronavirus cat is out of the bag and beyond the point of containment. The only question now is how much damage it will do before an effective vaccine is found.
IRA's, 401Ks are long term savings. It's normal to expect several up/down cycles before you need that money to live on. And pointless to stress over today's market swings. But then before you finally retire and start living on lifetime savings, its prudent to move any short-term needs out of that unpredictable realm. It depends on where you are in that continuum whether you should be concerned.

At the moment we're pressuring an inlaw, executor of the estate of another inlaw, to liquidate a small account that will be split as inheritance among other family members. He thinks the market will go back up short term. Everybody's telling him don't gamble, just sell!

To make believe that this entire story (the whole COVID-19 issue) is not political is the epitome of ignorance...
No it's not necessarily a partisan political issue bu entire reason it has been allowed to spread is because of travel and the root of limiting travel is entirely political...

So in actuality the only reason this virus is an issue and could become a much bigger issue is all because of politics...there is no way to get around it...by keeping partisan politics out of the discussion and not naming names is the way to go...

I simply don't see any benefit from Political context? Even the most cleverly disguised.

If we get to the point of the government having to take control then I might feel differently. If that happens we can start a thread about that specifically.

Right now it's beneficial for me to hear statistical data.

Oh, ok, you wanted statistical data. Fair enough.
I thought you wanted updates, including predictions on whether it will spread to U.S., Missouri, etc.. and do we need to prepare and take action.

Reekes3400's link seems like a good source.

I agree with others who say its difficult to separate this from politics (or capitalism, or a slew of other issues etc..)
Example: Is it rational to consider a travel ban into country for a couple weeks? (We did it after 9/11 when (only) ~3000 people died.) To ask, or consider, such a question gets political...

If this goes pandemic (if not already), 3000 deaths will look like a small number. Then again, we can say the same about the flu.

Yeah, was trying to think of that but it escaped me.

Richard, remember how many shots we had before going to SEA? They knew quite some time ago about things like this.

Day traders ...

That was 20 years ago. Now it's all done with computers. It's called "high frequency trading". It's so fast that the length of the network cables is important. Companies are buying sites close to the exchanges to park their servers because that makes them a millisecond faster than the other guys.

BTW they're all front running trades made by ordinary people like us. It's another way that wall st. steals from citizens.
