I think those numbers are what is scaring a lot of people. If you look at it from percentages if they held the same as those figures show and the same number of people got this new virus, 35.5 million, it would result in 1.8 million deaths.

Regular flu death rate 0.0009

Corona Virus death rate .0525

The real question is are the numbers right. I am sure there are way more people with the corona virus than reported but am also sure that the regular flu has been under reported also. Just a WAG but I think the rate is high on the new virus and probably also high on the regular flu. I have had the flu several times in my life and have never gone to the doctor for it. Same for lots of friends and family.

Hopefully we don't see the numbers go nearly that high and it just goes away.
I'm surprised there have been few comments on Cat Driver's post. But that's the problem, not too many people understand math.

But since the testing of the population is so limited no one knows the death rate.

Girls can be just as, if not more, lax on their personal hygiene. My current job allows me to see all types of people in all types of living conditions. No gender, nationality, religion, political persuasion, amount of wealth, etc... is immune from bad hygiene. It's nasty. :p

...and it's extremely widespread as well Mossy.... All you have to do is visit the supermarket to see it close up and personal... and not in the potty room either. Walking down the aisle. One of my favorites is a clown (male or female with a runny nose, wiping thee snot on their sleeve. , or their hand and then handling fresh produce....... yuk. Instant transfer of body fluids to some unsuspecting person.

Of course then there is the person who uses the potty to take a leak because the urinals are all being used that don't bother to lift the toilet seat and whizzes all over it and leaves. People generally don't care or don't care until they catch something, then the whining commences.

Kind of surprised more people don't catch more stuff than they do today. Personal hygiene is basically non existent today so relearning it to keep from contracting the Wuhan Flue has a steep learning curve. Not at all sure that curve can be mastered.

Guess a shoping cart loaded with TP and hand sanitizer is a start..........

Bottom line here if if I succumb to the Wuhan Flu I you won't see me post anything again...... I'll be 'up there' hopefully, watching down and chuckling to myself about the stupidity of humans, in general.

Not his directly, but there have been several posts trying to explain the difference between the flu and corona. It's their choose if people choose to only read what they want to hear.

Yep... it just might be every generation must relearn the wisdom of their elders... as a kid each Saturday was too down cleaning... grandma even cleaned behind the refrigerator and desinfected the condensate evap tray underneath... As long as I can remember she wore gloves out and always when handling money...

It sounds like we 2 hours from a National Emergency Declaration.

At 3:00 PM ET

Declaring an emergency under the Stafford Act would allow mobilization of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and direct federal aid to states. Such a declaration would allow a state to request a 75 percent cost-share for expenses such as emergency workers, testing, medical supplies and vaccinations.

As I said in another post...Things can always get worse...
All the school closings, the cancellations and suspensions of sporting events etc., etc...will definitely wake some folks up or at least make them take notice...It is and will be a learning experience for all of America and the rest of the world...

There will be a scalable line on reaction or over reacting that can possibly invoke the boy who cried wolf syndrome...if the gloom and doom precautions, hype and predictions prove to be more knee jerk than prudent...it could lead to bigger problems should the same type of crisis happen again...

Yet we've all read about the precedent already set by Italy. The real irony is that if we have widespread pandemonium, some will say "They should have done something sooner." Yet if actions are taken to mitigate the spread of the virus so that it only has minimum long term effects, we really won't know if that action worked, or was just the powers-that-be overreacting.
