Or how bout Obesity? Or lack of exercise? Or high cholesterol? Or stress? Or eating processed food? Or lack of proper sleep? Or improperly dressing in bad weather? Or???

See how this could get out of control? What I do might seem unacceptable to others so I should be put on the list of those that we aren't going to take care of!!!! What you do might seem unacceptable to me so I want you added to the list!!! Who exactly is going to determine what is supportable behavior and what is not?? Hmmmmmm…….

IF you are smoking and using alcohol to the point of abuse it does affect me. I have to help pay for that because you can't afford the healthcare to pay for what is wrong with you. Ditto on not having car insurance. I have to pay more for the extra coverage because someone else chooses to buy cig's and beer instead of paying for car insurance.

Someone who was very close to me always used to have spirited debates with me saying the same thing. Then I watched him die from stage 4 lung cancer. In their final days, they admitted that smoking, of all the bad habits we could do without was the #1 least justifiable.
Smoking & vaping just sucks. Period. Theres simply NO reason to do it and Im happy to see it banned in more and more places. It offends so many. Its dirty, it smells and its a selfish habit. It kills so many people and causes so much secondary illness-just like we see right now with Corona. Then we have to pay for oxygen, increased days missed from work and all the other smoking related crap-public smoking areas, signs, forest fires, and on & on.
It would be easier to nearly completely eradicate and I'd bet the farm if it were driven from existence, its savings would more than pay for the other poor judgement health issues you listed.
Continuing to justify smoking because theres other bad habits like eating unhealthy is just a poor excuse to keep doing something thats bad.

How is it determined that after 2 weeks of self quarantine, you are good to go? That's been the benchmark right along. How was that determined and who determined it? In as much as there is no vaccine and in as much as some 'experts' say you can get over it and then get it again... Where does the 2 week duration come in? I'm curious about that.

The average time between exposure and symptoms appearing is something like 7 days. Two weeks would be at least a couple standard deviations from that, maybe three. Very few people would not show symptoms after two weeks yet still be infected.

Of course testing would show if you're infected. Being tested would be far superior to just waiting two weeks. But we don't have enough tests available to test people who are showing symptoms let alone people who are not but may have been exposed. The two weeks quarantine is the next best thing.

My sister in law's currently got symptoms matching covid-19. She was on a trip with my mother in law, who is now self-quarantined. My wife finally talked SIL into calling her doctor. Neither are from California.

PRIME PubMed | [Potential false-positive rate among the 'asymptomatic infected individuals' in close contacts of COVID-19 patients[Potential_false_positive_rate_among_the_'asymptomatic_infected_individuals'_in_close_contacts_of_COVID_19_patients]_

Conclusions:
In the close contacts of COVID-19 patients, nearly half or even more of the 'asymptomatic infected individuals' reported in the active nucleic acid test screening might be false positives.

After I read this I realized others around the COVID-19 patient could be quarantined due to a false-position test results. If this is happening it could help explain one reason for the high numbers found after testing does start.

The medical community is learning the ins and outs of COVID-19 and that there are no magic bullets and tests that work the same for all people. Progress is being made.

I think that is why SLOWING the rate of spread is job one today so the medical community knows better week by week how to deal with the COVID-19 impact within limitations of understanding, meds and treating equipment.

Kind of what I thought actually. So, in theory you could get it, (test positive) quarantine yourself for a couple weeks (providing you don't need to be hospitalized), go out and get it again and again and again... Not good at all.

I guess in theory, this (Wuhan Flu) could keep right on giving forever or until there is no one left to infect... Is that correct? That is frigging scary.... Nice gift from the Chinese, I'd say. So infants and young kids are immune (for some reason) but when they reach a certain age (maybe puberty), they they can catch it. How comforting.

Time to devote as much medical science to finding a vaccine and a cure as possible. Running low on TP is inconsequential in reality...

We just do not know much. Can someone survive and get re-infected?....some sources say yes...and that would be concerning.

So far no cure...and I doubt that one is possible as there is no cure for "normal" flu.

No vaccine yet, but that is more probable and will have a huge effect. Issue is the time to develop and distribution. Then we have the issue of dealing with mutations...which is why current flu shots do not insure immunity. But even a 50% effective vaccine is material.

The 1918 pandemic lasted just over a year before dying out and/or people developing an immunity to it. My fear is if this is an "engineered" virus, developing immunity may be compromised in some way. But we do not know at this point.

Like you, I live in rural MI and am in the increased risk population. We just need to be smart and reduce our chances until more is known. Staying "healthy" while the "just the flu" types go about in oblivion works to our advantage. They will be the first and largest wave to hit and overwhelm the system. Some will die because facilities cannot handle the load. The longer we last, the more time for things to ramp up (like they did in Wuhan building more hospitals) and more that will be known. It is a numbers/time game...

Reduce contacts to reduce risk of infection or delay it as long as possible.
Try to survive the first wave
Hope we are as good as the Chinese at mobilizing resources.
Hope for enough time for the scientists to come up with something.

Oh I totally understand what you are saying. If I keep naming bad habits I'll hit on one that you do that contributes to a higher cost of some form for the rest of us. No need to go there.

I'm just wondering who is going to create the list of those habits that get no society monetary support?

Think I'd vacation at home and stay safe and healthy. I know we might use out RV this summer but it will be 'backyard' camping. Travelling puts you at as much higher risk for contact with infected people who may or may not know they are...

Daughter got an email from airbnb that our reservations were through.. they made an exception for extraordinary circumstances and allowed cancellation with full refund, so we cancelled.

As I said to Step, I'm in total agreement.

Once again,,,,, who's going to determine what bad habit is not supported???

Being a farmer, who have several daily habits that would absolutely offend city folk and they'd want to put those things on their list. :)
