In low range, and even 2ND gear,,, you should be able to walk circles around the tractor,,

0.8 MPH is less than half a slow walk,, 1.1 MPH is about half of a walk speed, if you have an arthritic back,,

Agreed. I think you're in first gear of the high range. If you were in 1st gear of the low range, you would be less than one MPH. That's slower than molasses.
The H-L shift sometimes sticks on mine.

See, this is what I am thinking! So maybe I am not crazy?! I mean, I am the slowest human alive, but even I can outwalk 0.8 mph & I felt that an 18 yr old tractor should not give me whiplash in 2nd gear low. The H/L knob itself is definitely at the top of the shifty slot (that is absolutely the technical term for it, I'm sure). I wiggled it a bit, but didn't have time to fool with it too much. I will shift it around some more tomorrow -- if it is sticking in high, is "jiggle the handle harder" the best course of action or is there something else to check out?

ETA -- It appears in the manual that the top of the slot is supposed to L, although the diagram isn't as clear as it could be. Is that correct (I'm thinking of whether the knob might have gotten turned around so the labels are reversed, as I had happen on an old vehicle)?

Up is high range, down is low range... you're in high range.

We have a winner! I did confirm this afternoon in testing that the knob handle did indeed get twisted upside down so the labels were reversed, it's not stuck, & I am now able to bushhog at a speed that even a blind box turtle could outrun.
