my point is people should have been better prepared

It's not just people, it's business, stores, distributors, hospitals, county government, state government, federal government. Everyone is skating too close to the edge. Saving too little, spending too much, living too high. I don't even know if this will change anyone's mind.

Humans seldom change our mind/ways of acting when the safety net is in place. This is the first time in my 69 years to fully realize I really might be dead in the next 30-90 days. I had that talk with our daughter last night. It was hard for both of us.

However I have not cancelled my 110th birthday bash. If I missed it it would embarrass me to death. :)

^^^^^

Can you cite your source? As Abraham Lincoln famously said

I think there have been several reports about survival after intubation/ventilator became necessary. The number I recall is 85% mortality in those requiring ventilation in the Chinese experience. Not unexpected and probably not much worse than for other serious pneumonia in a high risk population.

I tend to disagree. In life things happen. People get injured, lose jobs, etc. I don’t think it is the government’s job to bail people out in bad times. People should have savings for that. There is a saying that when the tide goes out you can tell who was skinny dipping. Many people live beyond on their means with no savings whatsoever. I am not talking about people in poverty I am talking about people with six figure jobs, new cars, boats, Mc mansions, latest gadgets, eating at restaurants every night, etc and every bit of it is financed. I find it hard to feel sorry for them for not having an emergency fund.

I never envisioned this pandemic happening but I have always saved because I knew something would someday happen. Financially it isn’t great but unless this drags on for years I will be ok.

I have Dad and Grandma to thank... both made the Great Depression very real to a impressionable kid.

Grandma would point at homes people lost and many she would say had been living high off the hog and heavy in the stock market. Her entire life except for a modest mortgage she paid cash/check.

Dad was working as a kid delivering the Tribune and odd jobs starting age 8 and turned over what he earned.
