Not starting

So, I have a yanmar 1500 and it will not start. No click, not even trying when I turn the key. I have the decompressor down and in full throttle just absolutely no response. We tried giving the battery a jump, it clicked once then nothing. So now we have battery on a charger but if this doesn稚 work where do I go from here? I noticed I had my left turn signal on for some reason, but I don稚 even have a left turn signal, could this have run the battery out? Thanks in advance.

You clean the battery cables and ground cable to the frame ? .........

You mean to remove like corrosion or just general debris? It may need to be cleaned, but it started just fine last month, this is the first time I致e had a starting problem. Is there a proper way to clean them? I know my dad used to pour coke over stuff to remove corrosion but don稚 know if that痴 really recommended.

The clicking once and then nothing is pretty much always a bad connection. The connection where the ground cable bolts to the frame is a common failure point. You will need to remove the bolt and clean both the terminal and the frame to a shiny metal and bolt it back up. Emery cloth works nicely but Im sure sandpaper would also. Then I would do the same for the battery terminals themselves.

One method wire brushing until shines follow by light coating grease.

Charge the battery. Take it to a shop and have it load tested. Clean battery posts and terminals well. Check cable ends for corrosion where wires connect. Inspect and clean frame ground as required.

Ok, so I wire brushed the connectors and I finished fully charging the battery, and I put it back and it started right up. All is well! Thanks for the help!

DO NOT USE GREASE ON BATTERY TERMINAL CONNECTORS! Grease will at some point hold any moisture that accumulates and then cause corrosion to develop! There are anticorrosion sprays available if you wish to use them. Personally, I like them bare of coverings and paint, that way I can do a visual inspection to see if it needs to be cleaned. A good practice is to inspect and clean (if needed) your battery cables (both ends) when you do any service to your tractor—oil change, grease it, whatever.
If inspecting becomes a habit you can avoid that headache many times.

I had to replace my Neg. cable when I purchased my 2000. 12+ yrs. and still use the same Battery that came with it. I bought this one ASIS. from Spalding. I never "had to clean" my connections but That once. I did pull them to check the condition of them. Actually just a couple yrs. back. Start of the season and was getting ready to start it up for the first time after sitting over the Winter. Just under a carport so it stays outside. I always put a full charge on the battery before even thinking about attempting to start it. I usually end up around 12.25V. after sitting. I noticed my grease was about gone and dirty so I decided I might want to check it while I was waiting on charging it up.
