How bad is the hood? If still functional and/or it could be massaged back into shape, I'd only worry about replacing the headlight.

The damage was caused by a good friend. He and some buddies showed up to help me for a day splitting wood. We got a great deal done, of course.

It's a bad situation since I believe he was careless, specifically after being warned to not do that thing that caused the problem. But he (and friends) were also generous with their time toward me.

So, working alone does have certain benefits?

To me if they dont have enough money to buy their own then they dont have the money to fix yours if they borrow it.

That is a truism that a lot of people forget.

That is a difficult situation. They came in to help and spent their time helping you, what's their time worth? I don't loan out power tools, except a friend came over every Saturday for several weeks to help on a construction project. He asked to borrow my tiller - ummm. I let him do it fully expecting it to come back damaged, so it is a trade-off. I still think I got a good bargain on that.

Sorry about your tractor. Is the hood metal or fiberglass? I had almost the same thing happen to my 231s. I had cut a big tree that blew over in a storm. I had some big rounds in the bucket and was raising it up to dump it on the brush pile. Of of them flipped backwards somehow and put a huckuva big dent in my hood. I was very upset with myself.

Yes, friends can be expensive... even when being helpful.

But the potential for a tractor to cause massive damage in the wrong hands is enough to make an inexperienced operator an absolute no-no.

The loaning part is a risk if the experience and sensibility of the borrower leave ANY question about trustability. That said, I'm careful about loaning or borrowing any tool. The tractor is off limits. Too much potential downside.

Well, that kinda mitigates/muddies things. They were working on your land and somewhat on your behalf. So while he was careless and was warned specifically, He is probably also unskilled and inexperienced. Bad deal all around. Can you ask him for a partial payment/split of the damage? Can the sheet metal be repaired? If not by you then by a body shop, and you buy the light and install it yourself? Maybe this can be rectified for a more reasonable amount of money than the full dealership thing. You have learned a hard lesson, and I would hope he has learned something too. Good luck with it.

Yeah it’s tough with good friends, luckily I dented/smashed mine on my own, the day before I sold it...lol. Knocked $1k of the price and called it even.

So he was working under your supervision... Stuff like that happens all the time on the job. It's a failure of the supervisor. If the company made the employee pay for the damaged equipment, there'd be a lot of indentured servants in America. LOL … Call it a lesson in job site management. Good friends are more valuable than stuff.
