I cleaned up a huge storm fall pine today. I hate pine trees. There’s pines down all across the county from recent storms. View attachment 650371View attachment 650372

Why do you hate pines? 90% of what I cut is pine .

They have tons of brush and they get everything within a mile covered in sap. As for firewood valve it rots very quick and the heat value is a fraction of oak. I’ll take that log to the pallet mill and everything else from that tree will go to the burn pile. Then again I move tons of wood every year or if you want to be literal thousands of tons so I can be picky.

I guessed it was about a 4 X 4 and looked at a log weight calculator - a 4' diameter doug fir log 8' long weighs over 3800 lbs. And DF is fairly light. It looks like a good wt to me. Strong FEL on Kioti's. A lot more than my 30 hp L3010 can pick.

OK, the log. I calculated weight based on volume and the density, as you did. I have measured in years past weight loss from drying of over 35% for a DF log like this. But that was over 5y or so, and I use a scale that I hang from my bkt. The log in the above photo is still very wet.

As for lifting a 1500 or 1600# log, it is more about the weight of the tractor and counterweight (hoe attachment). With only a box scraper on the back, trying to lift something that heavy just tips the tractor. That is why I never take off my hoe (about 1400# or so with subframe). The most I have lifted with this tractor is about a ton (a pallet of ceramic tile), and only barely off the ground.

With 5:10 gears in the rear end and that much stickoff probably so. You can definitely load a truck with logs until the front end is too light.

They are great if you're growing timber, but terrible near houses and roads. They shed limbs constantly, and the needles are a PITA.

Yeah, I am very small scale, just cut whatever I need. I don't burn much pine , most of mine goes into making lumber for around the place on my little mill. Everything around here is a pine plantation, mine was also before I bought it so I have mostly pine with a little hardwoods along my riparian corridor and the bottoms is all.

Agreed but its what I have. And yes needles are a pain!!

But they make GREAT construction lumber!!

Very true, I have about 40 acres of white pine that I manage for timber but the ones near the house are slowly [or quickly if its windy] coming down.

I have very few pines here, 1 giant one that is over 3' dbh, then the rest are scattered and nowhere close in size. The bulk of what I have is red oak, great for firewood but not so good for construction lumber. But I do have cedars, so I can at least Mill some siding, oh did I mention I really want to get a sawmill?
