I found what I believe to be a Massey #25 disc. It has the round pipe frame and the twin levers for adjusting the angles. It’s 8’ approximately. It’s in need of paint, but otherwise good condition. Might need one bearing box fixed or replaced, which I think is easy done. Couple questions:

Would this be a good match to my NH TC45d hydrostatic?

The man is asking $1000 and is not flexible on price. From a cursory look online, this doesn’t seem out of line.

Would love to have any advice you gents and ladies have. Thank you and happy Easter.

If a towed Disc Harrow is the appropriate implement for your application, go for it.

If your tractor is 4-WD I speculate your 3,300 pound bare tractor weight TC25d may grunt a bit, but should handle it OK. My Disc Harrows have been TPH mounted.

Others with Massey #25 and/or other towed Disc Harrow experience may contradict me.

What tractor does the harrow owner have?

As one who paid $1,300 for a very, very nice all-original Ford 101 series plow with Landing Lever several years ago, I can understand the attraction.

I have a model 22, and love it. I believe the only differenceis, the 22 has wooden axle bearings, and the 25 cast iron type. Gangsare easily adjusted for angle of cut with the levers. Nice for going full cut for the first pass over, then straighten to preferred angle for the finish pass. Sure beats removing bolts to change the angle of cut.

Seems a bit high to me, especially needing a new bearing. We always figured 20% mark up at dealers for profit, and I'm guessing you checked dealer prices.

I'd hate to offer him $800 in greenbacks, and not really want it. Cash is still king. Although, the factor of the easy adjustment is worth something.

I’m not sure what you mean, I don’t know a lot about these.

It is a 3 point disc, my tractor is 45hp.

If your MF TC45d has 4-WD it should pull an 8' width disc with 18" diameter pans fine.

The eight foot width with 20" diameter pans may be too much. Your TC25d may run out of traction/power with gang angles set aggessively or on second pass when soil is soft. Border line case.

The eight foot width with 22" diameter pans -- too much.

Bear in mind that I do not know your exact conditions.


In terms of your tractor, tractor weight is the primary factor in capability. Then 4-WD vs 2-WD and tractor horsepower in this case.

In terms of the disc, the draft force (implement resistance) is proportional to pan diameter, disc width, pan spacing (7" or 9") and gang angle adjustment.

Then there is your soil and soil moisture.......

I pull my 6' model 22 with a ford 2000 3 cyl gasser, w/28 hp on the drawbar, which had a straight 4 speed, but I installed a 3 spd.aux. transmission. It will pull it in 2nd gear, in direct drive just fine. I do know it's back there after a few passes, and the dirt is finer, set at full cut, going nearly into the hubs. Opens the governor some, but doesn't lug it by any means. The tires are loaded for weight, so traction isn't a problem. If you have weights, or 4-wd, it shouldn't be a problem, until you turn with 4-wd. Never had a tractor with 4-wd, but assume it's like all other 4-wd's, it turns much better with it disengaged.

I pull my 6' model 22 with a ford 2000 3 cyl gasser, w/28 hp on the drawbar, which had a straight 4 speed, but I installed a 3 spd.aux. transmission. Your tractor weight and width is the same as my Kubota L3560.

Tire width is probably 64". So two disc widths would usually be 72" and 84". 84" disc is 17% wider/heavier than 72" disc and will require about 17% greater tractor traction and power to pull with all pan diameters and all and pan spacing.
