Neighbor dog on my property harassing wildlife

We have two pets and they don’t bother a soul off our property.

How do you know?

It always seems to be "others" animals/pets that cause problems, as opposed to our own.

Statistically, that can't be true.

There seems to be a lot of comments/suggestions that amount to taking the law into your own hands. Why not simply call up and get animal control involved? Laws probably vary from county to county but most have leash laws when off their own property.

While a completely different application (but caused by the same underlying problem) as a cyclist, I have seen innumerable accidents caused by dogs chasing cyclists, running into a group that is riding, etc. If there is a problem dog that I encounter multiple times, the first step is a polite conversation with the homeowner. That usually solves the problem. If not, a call to animal control invariably does.

In most places, a call to animal control will result in a warning followed be steep fines, followed by confiscation of the animal.

Again, this is an effective way to get the message across without you becoming the bad guy.

btw, the same trail cam has many pictures from a number of black bears, one and sometimes multiple coyotes, and a cougar. I was hoping nature would take care of this for me, but so far it hasn't.

'Would you prefer to have your whole dog, or perhaps just a portion of it that wasn't found to be edible?'

I would really stress to my neighbor that "THIS PROBLEM IS HIS RESPONSIBILITY" to resolve and not to make it my responsibility.

And I would let my neighbor know if he cannot control his dog from chasing wildlife on my property, I will take these steps to protect the wildlife:

1. I will shoot at the dog with less than lethal 12ga/410 ammunition of "BLANK ROUNDS" to condition the dog to stay away.

2. If #1 does not work, then I will shoot at the dog with less than lethal 12ga/410 ammunition of "RUBBER BALL/RUBBER BUCKSHOT ROUNDS" to condition the dog to stay away.

3. If #1 & #2 does not work, then I will call the local animal control to resolve the issue.

4. We won't go there because it's not the dog's fault...

I do know that the lest than lethal 12ga/410 ammunition does work on black bears to change the behavior of it's location near my home.

Good luck, KC

First I would talk to the neighbor as you promised.

If it is a problem again, can you catch the dog? If so take it to animal control or have them come pick up. That way he gets a hassle of having to go get it and likely has to pay a fine to spring the dog from puppy prison.

If that does not work 3 S method.

I have many trail camera pictures, and I got a good shot of him at the pond's edge after he came out of the water. I think I will make a page of photos and take them over for a discussion.

Thank you for all of the replies.

Sounds like an answer to me.
Print up pictures of the dog & bears, coyotes, & cougar.
Express your concern for the wildlife AND your concern for HIS dog.
It's not safe for it to be worrying the wildlife in this area. It MIGHT get eaten.

My neighbor has two dogs. One of them likes to run. None of our properties are fenced. He has about 5 acres, I'm closer to 100. I know his dog is frequently on an obscure part of my property, as my trail cams catch pictures of him.

Yesterday, the dog was in my pond, chasing the ducks and geese and barking. I both chased it away and tried to pepper spray it. It ran home but not before barking at me.

I've mentioned this to my neighbor before, and things got better for a while. Last time we spoke, it was left up to me that I would contact him again if the problem persisted.

I need to contact the neighbor again. He is friendly and responsible. But he is gone a lot for work, and I'm pretty sure it is his wife that lets the dog loose. Every time I visit their home the dogs are in the yard unrestrained.

I need to keep on good relations with this neighbor, as we have shared interests in something. So, what would be a good approach to solving the dog problem, without creating a neighbor problem?

I do realize I could shoot a dog harassing the wildlife. But I did agree to communicate if the problem continued, which it has. Ideas?

It's not the dogs fault...He is just doing what a dog does. It's the ignorance of his owner not stopping him from doing it.

They are both cats. One of the cats wandered up pregnant. My wife and daughters tried to find the owner but never could. We assume she was dropped off. She won’t wander any further than the back porch and will only go out if the back door is left open. It’s like she is afraid she will be abandoned again or will not be let back in the house. The other cat’s paws have only touched grass a few times, ever. She was born in our house and has no idea she is a cat. If you take her out in the back yard she will sprint to the back door and set by it until we let her in. The only time either leave our 1.5 acres is to go to the vet.

So yes I do know. Both are fixed. It’s called being responsible. My pets (actually my daughters’s pets) it my responsibility to make sure they are not a problem for others.

Maybe a shock training collar? We've ordered from Chewy before. This one was $200, now $45. Mixed reviews. 3000ft. range.

The shock training collar reads like a good idea. But how would you get the wife to wear it and have it shock her when the dog left the yard?

I had a neighbors dog on my property, snarling and barking at my wife on the porch. Two days in a row. The first day I thought, well, mistakes happen. The second day was the same though. I didnt know for sure where it belonged but chased it about 1/2 mile with a lot of noise and a baseball bat. It went home and me with it. The lady came out of the house. I told her to keep her dog out of my yard. I didnt make any threats but I was really definite about it. No further problems.
