Well, I don't have to look it up, I was there, here's what the SS guys had left,

When the TW5 was pushing it's last piece through!

With the TW5 you are making 4 pieces every pass, and you don't have to return the ram all the way for the next piece to be shoved though...

No question about it, the TW5 blew it away and some of that was, because both splitters had some bigger harder to split rounds, the SS would need 2 hits to make one split, mean while the TW pushed them right through the 4-way.

I have no desire to own a Super Split, but for a real comparison, what is the cost of a SS vs. a TW5? I have a TW-1 that I bought barely used. After the first owner passed, his widow decided she needed a lawn mower more than a log splitter. If the SS is more competitively priced to a TW-1 then the TW5 isn't really a fair match. It's like putting a wheel loader up against a toro dingo or a pro chainsaw up against a Crapsman 14". I am all for the TW5, but to keep the matchups even, I think price should be a consideration. I think my TW-1 would do well against a SS if we were splitting elm.

The 5 is way more money than a SS, but a 3HD isn't and it's a bit faster than a 5.

It's just that the SS guys always say a SS is faster than "any" hydraulic that isn't a processor, and that's BS...

You are correct about twisty knotty wood needing a double hit on an SS splitter. I'll have to check out the TW5. I love my SS because it is at waist height and has a table on it. My hydraulic splitter runs about 10 seconds with the tractor running at 2k. I only have a single wedge on it. My I beam won't withstand a 4 way. I built this one back in the early 80's on a limited budget and many used parts.

Every year I end up with wood that I toss to the side because my eyes were too big when I was splitting and the wood will not fit in my stove. Or sometimes I simply want some smaller starter wood. I would not mind having an electric 7 ton kinetic splitter to bust up some larger pieces. My hydraulic splitter gets run out of fuel and put away in the back of the shop at the end of spring and a small electric would be handy. But not for primary splitting.

I agree faster is better but most of us home owners only split 5 or 6, maybe 8, cord a year. It's not that big a job. Then the splitter sits idle the rest of the year. For me super speed is not on top of the priority list.

My neighbor has a little electric splitter he keeps in his sugar house. He uses it to make small pieces to get his fire going. It's amazing what it will do. Don't know what brand it is. He picked it up in a yard sale.

I cut split and stack pretty much year round. A little of this, a little of that. Slow and steady for me.
Of course the weather has a lot to do with it.

It's amazing how much things can change in 48 hours.

Perfect weather, too... Sunny and 45, good weather to tend my smoker outside and get some work done. You guys can keep that 80 degree crap, if I want to be hot I'll put another log on the fire.

And if I want to be cold I'll jump in the pool!
