Neighbor dog on my property harassing wildlife

A lot of people like to run hounds on bears, the dogs will go anywhere the prey does. I'm not saying that it's right but it's something we have to live with. Many of those hunters come up from Pennsylvania, the Carolina's, and Georgia. Are they allowed to run hounds freely down there?

They are not!! They are not allowed to run freely ANYWHERE as far as I'm concerned! Those dog hunters always throw out that "well dogs cant read signs" thing so they think its ok to them for them to cross over posted boundaries. NOT my posted boundaries!!:D

They are here in Missouri. The dogs are required to have a collar with owner's information. A lot of hunters here use tracking devices as well. This Winter I noticed a pickup stop on the hill south of my house. A couple guys got out and stood in the road by the truck for a couple minutes. Then I saw one of their hunting dogs come out of my CRP. They loaded him and left. Neither they nor the dog were a pest or threat to me and/or my property.

I've never heard of a hunting dog being aggressive when passing thru people's properties. But someone can possible refute that.

Yep, back when I used to live in Missouri hunting dogs would go through my place, not all made it out. Every once in a while I'd have a hunter ask if I'd seen one of his dogs.. and nope I never had.. ;)

And if they were going through they WERE being a threat to my property and all the game on it!

I live in a rural NC. My experinces have been far different than yours as far as "county folks take care of their animals". Had multiple local "renters" near by who would never take care of their dogs. A drive up to the local gas station and I know at least 4 dogs where their "local" owners let the dogs roam.

Agreed, but those were displaced city folks most likely and not country folks. There is a difference.

I am friends with the bear hunting group in my area. They run dogs and I have never heard of one disturbing livestock or pet dogs. The group has permission to run on my property. I have been with them during training period...which is actually the most dangerous for the dogs as a bear cannot be shot even if it attacks a dog. The local bear hunters generally respect private property but obviously a dog does not know property boundaries.

Just an FYI....Every dog they run has a tracking collar. I would caution anyone shooting a hunting dog to be sure they are causing damage or are a threat before killing them. The guys running dogs will be there to pick up their dog in short order and it will get ugly if you shoot a dog that did not deserve it. These dogs are worth upward of $5000.

If the dog has a tracking collar, it will generally not be aggressive...at least the ones we have here. I have seen these guy shoot a $5000 dog that snaps at a handler. The first time it gets a beating...the second time a bullet. Seems cruel to some but it is their way. There are up to 20+ hunters plus guests that will pick up and handle each others dogs so there is little quarter given to a "bad" dog.

Other areas may be different.

As I said before, glad you aren't my neighbor. You certainly don't fit the description of country folks here in Missouri.

I think my wife would snarl at the dog and it would run away, never to be seen again.

I know my wife would shoot it, period.

You have now posted enough info to be a suspect in any dog deaths in your area.

So I have 100 acres here.. seems I've always had at least some acreage.. anyway.. I get the oddball dog wander through and I have no problem with that as long as its only occasionally and its not a bother, no big deal. If I get a dog in that's aggressive to me, my family, or my pets I will deal with it accordingly. Now hunting dogs.. if they make a mistake and come through once, so be it.. if they come through again, they wont return home!! I also (living in the country) get drop offs, dogs that idiot city folk drop off out in the country... normally I'll try to just chase them off, if they look to be in bad shape, thin hungry or whatever.. I'll feed them and show them some kindness, its not their fault their owners were monsters, after a couple days of eating again I'll take them to a shelter.

Speaking of drop offs a neighbor down the road 1/4 mile or so had a drop off several years ago of a black rabbit (or several?) anyway now there are black rabbits all over for miles . . . :licking:

Well in this state anyway they HAVE to get permission to go on private property to look for or retrieve their dogs. And if they have 5 grand invested they need to be more responsible about their dogs!!

MY property is MY property and I did not buy it for others to run their dogs on!
