Neighbor dog on my property harassing wildlife

Most people have the common sense to know when a dog presents a danger and needs to be put down. Those that post otherwise do so to be argumentative (no Coronavirus threads anymore), personal attacks, or lack of experience. I have seen what an aggressive dog will do to an animal or a person.

A dog being a pest can be driven away to live another day. Plenty of good options presented. But an aggressive dog is not a pest, it is a threat. There is a reason LEO's will rarely get involved if someone shoots a dog on their property.

Very few people will shoot unless forced to. Bad feelings between neighbors is the main reason. And then the need to disposed of the carcass.

If your sweet loving dog is ever shot, be aware it probably acted completely differently when getting into mischief. You are at fault for not training, socializing and/or controlling your dog.

So I have 100 acres here.. seems I've always had at least some acreage.. anyway.. I get the oddball dog wander through and I have no problem with that as long as its only occasionally and its not a bother, no big deal. If I get a dog in that's aggressive to me, my family, or my pets I will deal with it accordingly. Now hunting dogs.. if they make a mistake and come through once, so be it.. if they come through again, they wont return home!! I also (living in the country) get drop offs, dogs that idiot city folk drop off out in the country... normally I'll try to just chase them off, if they look to be in bad shape, thin hungry or whatever.. I'll feed them and show them some kindness, its not their fault their owners were monsters, after a couple days of eating again I'll take them to a shelter.

The property I lived on for 41 years was a favorite dump site for dogs. In the time I lived there I only had one dog that I "owned". The rest were dump offs. At one time I had five. All were great dogs and I never understood why they were dumped.

One was a yellow lab, reminded me of the dog in the movie "Ole Yeller". I tried to chase him off with my ATV for a couple weeks. I thought he was the neighbor's dog from a couple miles away. One day I was visiting my elderly neighbors just up the road. Wayne asked if I'd seen that yeller dog? I said yeah I've been running him off. Wayne laughed and said I don't think he's going anywhere, Dorothy's been feeding him at our hay lot..... I felt horrible. We named him Big John. Took a month before he quit running away when I drove in the driveway. Was an excellent dog that totally understood property boundaries.

A lot of people like to run hounds on bears, the dogs will go anywhere the prey does. I'm not saying that it's right but it's something we have to live with. Many of those hunters come up from Pennsylvania, the Carolina's, and Georgia. Are they allowed to run hounds freely down there?

The reality and law is that anyone can pretty much shoot a stray dog if they claim the dog was being "agressive" on their property. The only issue is if someone else actually sees what happens.

Pretty common sense that dogs can't talk LOL

They are here in Missouri. The dogs are required to have a collar with owner's information. A lot of hunters here use tracking devices as well. This Winter I noticed a pickup stop on the hill south of my house. A couple guys got out and stood in the road by the truck for a couple minutes. Then I saw one of their hunting dogs come out of my CRP. They loaded him and left. Neither they nor the dog were a pest or threat to me and/or my property.

I've never heard of a hunting dog being aggressive when passing thru people's properties. But someone can possible refute that.

Not much I can add here, except maybe a bit of personal observation. I grew up in the country, and feral cats were fair game (they eat quail, don't you know?) as were dogs that harass livestock. I recall my Dad killing several large dogs that were running sheep (this was in the Eastern part of the state), and they weren't even his sheep. It caused quite a stir; the dogs owner was not happy. For the most part, where I grew up in Western Oklahoma, folks kept their dogs home, and wouldn't have one that chased their...or any one else's...livestock.

When I got married and moved to the city, I thought the fence would keep our dog in. It didn't, and he promptly got hit by a car and killed. All of my dogs after that, I trained to stay in the yard...especially after we moved to our acreage. That works well, except when the city-lady-turned-country-lady let her female dogs outside when they come into heat.

Then there are neighbors...good neighbors and bad neighbors. Country folks pretty much are good neighbors, and take care of their animals. I try to avoid conflicts with my neighbors, and put up with a lot sometimes, but I don't want a feud. Even so, I have one that I haven't spoken to for nearly 10 years. Stray dogs are not a problem any more; but I would not hesitate to dispatch one that threatened the family. FWIW, my secretary's brother was a plastic surgeon. He said that a considerable part of his practice was repairing and reattaching the noses of children attacked by dogs.

I live in a rural NC. My experinces have been far different than yours as far as "county folks take care of their animals". Had multiple local "renters" near by who would never take care of their dogs. A drive up to the local gas station and I know at least 4 dogs where their "local" owners let the dogs roam.
