That is the way to go. My dad did this more than once.
But I will share a story from the other side. My neighbors have 2 vicious, I mean ANGRY, German Shepherds. I have a barn down at the corner of my property where it meets my neighbors property. The 2 dogs bark at me while I work in my barn sometimes for hours while I work there, and if it were not for their electric fence collars, it seems like they would tear me to shreds if they broke through.
Now before I go any further, YES, I understand my neighbor is perfectly within his rights to own dogs like that. I have no problem with him. Our daughters are friends and he takes excellent care of his property.
We also own(ed) dogs. These are harmless 15lb shitzu lap dogs and they were beloved. When you walk up to them, they wag their tails and lay there expecting you to rub their belly. So back in 2016, one of them wandered off our property about 100 into their property. Their shepherds tore him to shreds and killed him. Poor little guy suffered for a few hours and then succumbed to dozens of puncture wounds. I know it’s my fault and I have no right to any relief from them. We were pretty devastated and things were tense for a year or so.
I will keep my loaded shotgun in the barn and I will fill the first one of those vicious wolfs with lead BBs if they ever come after me on my property. But I wont pursue the second S and third S. I will call them and tell them to get their dead wolf off my property. Man I hate those dogs. They bark incessantly causing us to lose sleep and make the whole neighborhood nervous when we go for walks near their property.

So sorry to hear about your little dog!! BUT.. if it wandered onto their property not much you can do. But agreed, if they were to cross that property line I would down them in a heart beat.

Maybe a good blast with a high pressure hose if they are growling at the property line??

Isn't there a device that will send out a high-frequency noise (which only dogs can hear) when it detects a bark? It's supposed to annoy the heck out of them and gradually they learn that it happens when they bark and they stop barking for no reason. I think one of my neighbors used that successfully to solve a dog barking problem when we lived in town. You would only turn it on when you are down at your barn, so that they are associating it and learn to not bark at you (or if you really want to temper them, leave it on all the time I suppose).

The barking is annoying, I’m more worried about them breaking through and attacking me. I was viciously attacked when I was 10 years old by a German shepherd. I received 100 stitches and it weren’t for someone in the area pulling the dog off of me, it would have killed me.

Agreed, but those were displaced city folks most likely and not country folks. There is a difference.

Boy did you nail that. I'm seeing...for lack of a better word...city trailer trash moving to the country, not to farm or raise cattle, but to get away from...something...and maybe cook a little meth or some such. We had a murder in my home town of 400 souls a few years back; a man killed his brother over drugs. Went to a car show in a neighboring small town, and a considerable number of the visitors were down right scary. Not the place I grew up in.

Wow!! That is why I will not hesitate to shoot an aggressive dog. I have never had to...but everyone needs to think about what they should do if the happens.

I have no neighbors within two miles with an aggressive dog, so my choice is simple on my property. I had a neighbor 2 1/2 miles where my mail box is located, and he had aggressive dogs..one was a pit bull. He had them fenced in but they would get out occasionally. One time, one got out and came running over while I was getting the mail and I drew my gun. The owner started shouting and yelling and called the dog back. He asked me if I would have shot the dog and I told I would have had no choice. He nodded sheepishly. About a year later the same dog got out and never came home. His neighbor had chickens and the dog went after them...dead dog. SSS. The guy with the dog never did find out what happened.

Since I was only 10, there was nothing I could do.

Not that you seek my approval, but I support everything you say. I have my carry permit, and often wonder if I really need to start again. I used to carry while I am farming. I have run in to some bizarre situations and theres no help nearby. It ended up getting in the way in the cab. I used to tell anyone who asked I carried to shoot ground hogs.

We had a neighbor with two, then three dogs that ran loose. They moved from the big city and thought the country side was their domain. Dogs would run a mile each direction. I had a conversation with them a couple of times after the sheriff contacted them after someone else had reported them. But nothing changed.

When I rode my Polaris Ranger past them to get to my other property the dogs would chase me. So I got some pepper spray. When I came by the most aggressive one came out for his sporting event. I went on past, but 5 minutes later went back up that direction and was prepared. I went real slow. He came out as usual and was about 4-5' from my left boot. i took that spray and gave him a bath directed at his face. He did a U turn quickly and rolled and whimpered. He would come out after that, but stay about 30-40' away. Finally got hit by a vehicle!

Some folks just never get the concept of country living and controlling their animals. These folks, after a few months in the country, got a couple of goats, They had an earth contact home. The goats would get up on the roof with asphalt shingles. I told the owner those goats were going to cost them 10-12 thousand dollars. He said what for? I told him his roof will need replaced. Yep, a 55 year old city slicker.

I carry a Taurus Judge loaded with .410 bird shot, buck shot, and self defense loads in that order whenever I am on my tractor, mower, excavator, or on my properties. Any other time, a S&W 1911 .45 ... It just isn't safe out there anymore.
