Anybody here ever make money gambling?

My wife has. She just quits and saves it. My boss did win enough to pay for his trip and stay. He stopped and saved it. Stopping is the trick. You keep playing (both these were just the slot machines), you'll lose it all.

"The curve"?? A table that "dies out"??
I always hated the branch of math called probability that deals with randomness and odds. It always seemed too much like philosophy or religion, and hard to prove unless you roll dice for eternity...but the one thing I did learn, is the odds don't change based on past occurrences*. If you flip a coin 9 times and get heads every time, the odds of heads on the next flip is still 50/50.....so I don't know what you mean the "the curve".

*: It always drives me nuts when sports broadcasters says something like (say) "Green Bay is a favorite because they haven't lost a post-season home game in 25 years" - huh?? What does the 1995 team have to do with the 2020 team? Weird.

The bell curve is based on probability. Take 10K black balls ans 10K white balls, mix up good, flow through a funnel into a vertical frame. The balls will, array them selves in a parabolic curve. In the curve there will be clumps of white and black balls. Now days this has been proven by computers which can make many more propositions an hour than we can in a lifetime. Many years ago i went to a science museum. They had a mechanical bell curve machine and a computer setting side by side. It was uncanny how there results were the same but the computer displayed thousands of propositions compared to the mechanical device. The museum had a sign at the display about the history of the two machines. Both were used by the gambling industry to confirm individual propositions for their games.

I am not a statistician and do not understand it fully. By practice at the casino though; the booklets available giving true odds of different propositions has a lot of merit.

There was a joke about a mathematics professor who devised a theory on the odds at roulette, he went to the casino and played according to his theory then committed suicide, did he lose asked someone, no, he won.

Was he playing Russian roulette?
I don't get it...what am I missing?

I hate not getting jokes...once in 3rd grade a high-school'er asked me if I knew why Dr. Pepper comes in a can? "Because his wife died." (?) I carried that in my head to about 8th-9th grade before I figured it out. Then realized it wasn' that funny....just use Kleenex like every 8th grader does.

You can never count on probability. I read about a group that built a card counting computer system in the 70s. They went into casino and lost their $50000 bankroll . With computer, odds were 70-30 in their favor.

Everyone wins gambling, just ask them.

That's why casinos have so little curb appeal..🤪. Their electric bills must be paid by a charitable organization....oh yea, the gamblers.

Would one rather be "lucky in true love" or in gambling ? Would a big big multi million dollar payoff after taxes bring "true love" ? Is "marriage " classified as legalized gambling ? Cheaper too keep "her" / "him" ?
Don't get a mental hernia , but naive old me I always wondered ? :confused3: ------------:D

My father-in-law told us yesterday that he won $32,000 at the casino Sunday!

He has dementia, and hasn't been to the casino in 6 months, but hey, he was really happy about it, so we congratulated him. :) It was a beautiful sunny afternoon.
