Neighbor dog on my property harassing wildlife

I had a truckload of, shall we say hillrods, pulled into my driveway once back when I lived in Texas. They informed me they were looking for a Great Pyrenees that had been harassing their goats or something a mile or so down the road. Said if the found it they would shoot it on sight. I informed them that they were a long ways from home, that I had a Great Pyrenees, and that if they shot it I would shoot back and that I was good to about 4-500 yards and they made a great target up in the back of their pickup. They left and I never saw them again!
If they catch it and shoot it in the act of harassing their goats, that's one thing (and completely legal in most jurisdictions).
To go around looking for one not knowing for sure that's the right one is a completely different thing IMO...

An incredibly wide range of opinions and promised reactions to dog problems here. A few under reacting to the point of putting themselves in unnecessary danger and definitely a few over reacting going to unnecessary extremes in which they better pray when they discharge their firearm at a moving target, they dont miss and kill someone or something they love.
Some folks act like the dog is a human with the same standing in the pecking order as a human. Some folks create the image of standing at the window looking through the blinds with the ought six loaded & ready to shoot any creature that dares to trod on their sacred ground.
“ Hey Mabel, look! I just shot me a Chee wah wah with my .45 “

As is usual in these forums with these types of highly polarized and disputed topics, the truth, or the correct level of judgement lays somewhere in the middle.

Everyones got different circumstances. One size doesnt fit all.

You are "right on target" so to speak.

I agree also that you are on point.... I've been following this tread since day one & agree & disagree with many parts of it.... I have been unfortunate enough to have been on both ends of this discussion.... yes unfortunate enough...

I'm an ethical hunter, a gun advocate, & a animal advocate.... married to the most animal & human compassionate person I've ever met... besides our own animals we have fostered & rescued animals (mostly dogs) for the past 25+ yrs.; most of which others would not take (either due to breed, illness or temperament). Out of all of them (guessing 40++) we have only had one incident (& it was almost enough to make us stop).

I have had the unfortunate situation where a dog in our care (not ours) has done wrong & I have had to put the animal (humanly) down (I still blame ourselves for not being more diligent); I have also had a situation where my dog (yes mine) grabbed & held a person & that person tried to put a claim against me for my dogs actions (turned out to be justified actions).... & yet still I have had the unfortunate necessity to take down 2 dogs on our property for chasing & aggressively attacking other game. I however don't really believe in the SSS rule; I shot them after trying other methods (& not light heartily) but knowing my rights & who owned the dogs. I called the local authorities & explained the situation.... I had no reason to not call it in.... I understand why some people don't; as it can create a larger issue, but I own the property... I tried other methods & could prove it (& I have experience with dogs) I didn't do it lightly & it did bother me afterward... why... because, yes, some dogs are aggressive & out of control but unfortunately it usually begins with there owners & upbringing... 99% of them will do what you expect of them (unlike children... that is closer to 75% :) ).

The difference in your cases was it was YOUR animals. In many of the other cases in this thread, it was an unknown/unpredictable and unwelcome intruding animal. You had another chance because they were always on your property. When a wild dog attacks a pig or a cow, you may only have a few seconds of opportunity to put the attacker down, before your livestock or loved one pays a big price.

We kind of have the same philosophy. Ironcially, my one gate to the backfield has been down for years, and not once in the same amount of time have I ever had a trespasser on my land.

Please note, in a previous post in this thread, I mentioned that my neighbor asked me if he could hunt on my land and I told him yes.

General rule in life, always be nice and polite. Sad to say, I don't always adhere to that rule on a internet forum.

I let no one hunt my property, I only have 100 acres and there is just not room for more than me! I have a couple people I let fish my ponds though..

So it's only wrong to shoot the dog when it's YOUR DOG.

Got it.

Not surprised at all.

No my dog was not down at their farm harassing their goats, if they shot it just because it was a Pyrenees they would pay! I'll protect my dogs like they are my children, because they are!

That's like saying a Chinese man just robbed their farm stand so they are out to find any Chinese man they can and shoot him!

Apparently you do not "get it" at all!

That is exactly the case!

If it was on their place harassing their goats then it probably deserved it! It was not.

As I posted earlier in this thread, my 12lb ****zu wandered off onto my neighbors property and his 2 domesticated wolves (German shepherds) killed him.
Their Gardner saw the whole thing from a distance. He heard barking and my ****zu was on his back in the “submit” position and the dogs still tore him apart.
I didn’t do anything to my neighbors. I accepted he was killed for merely trespassing on their property. My dog wasn’t harassing their animals, barking or doing anything more than sniffing the grass.
I accepted my responsibility and learned if I ever own another dog, it must me restrained onto my property 24/7/365. Period.
The reason I’m saying this is because anyone on this thread that allows their dog to wander off their property should be prepared for a similar fate.
To think otherwise is haughty and dangerously presumptive to your dogs life.
