Thanks! The guy who harvests my apples along with a couple of larger orchards and his own vineyard has good news, he says he is having a normal year including contracts for the apples and for his prized premium grapes. So thankfully, the ag part of life here is normal.

I’m am certain that in the near future we are going to look back at this and think our response was crazier than the Y2K scare.

Of course UVC at 220 nm is effectively extinguished (absorbed and turned to heat) with a path length through air of only a millimeter or so.

It's not called the vacuum UV for nothing ;-)

If you want some UVC, I can set you up with a D2 , deuterium lamp and a power supply to light it up. ;-)
Supposing we hit the body with a tremendous ultra violet. Or take it inside the body through the skin or in some other way?

Think big news media outlets, advertising and MONEY

Because in order for businesses to survive and prosper, you have to have consumers willing to patronize them. It’s a two-part equation.

So far it appears that those who are ready and raring to go to “open America back up” are only small minority - maybe around 25% ...

The vast majority (upwards of 65%) want to take a more cautious approach.

The more that 25% engages in extreme, radical behavior the more I think you’re going see blowback against a rush to “open up” ...

I see your point but maybe you are basing it on a 1-3% death rate when based on the latest medical info it seems the death rate will be more like 0.02% at the most. While I am 69 the kids are 22 and they will carry on fine without me but I am serious about not missing my 110th birthday party even if I require a self driving Tesla to get there.

There are a few states going back to work that will be the canary in the mine. It is sad but the large source of death from COVID-19 is in the nursing homes world wide but that is where we send our sick to die as a matter of fact. There is no magic or medicine to stop even a fraction of nursing home deaths with or without the virus factored into the mix. Someone once said let the death bury the dead. Life if for the living. There has never been anyone that could prevent their own death or the death of others. The circle of life ends in death and it is just part of our reality. I want our kids to have a future with or without me.

I'm basing it on present public sentiment - more more, no less ... it's a tough sale ... but feel free to keep on trying to sell it ...

I think this one really is bad after seeing Wuhan, Italy, NYC. But so little is known about how fast it multiplies, that lockdown is the only known means to save lives at the moment. Hopefully contact-tracing and better predictions will make it possible to lift the lockdown soon but I feel that is unknown so far.

The public health guys say if the present measures keep it down they are going to look like their advice was foolish, unnecessary. If letting up lets Covid run wild they are going to look foolish too. They just can't win.

I was involved in Y2K stuff, responsible for some 70 PC's mostly used in the field by auditors. We got updates installed so they wouldn't scramble data, showing invoices overdue etc. That was simple. But fixing the big mainframe databases was a nightmare for those responsible in that area. Mostly because there was room for only two digits in the year field of everything. Re-writing the databases for four-digit years and modifying programs to four-digit subtraction for literally everything was a monumental task. But it got done in time so there was little disruption.

I remember my cousin went and bought still more firearms, he thought it would be like the end of civilization. I told him no, it will be more comparable to hearing about an airline strike somewhere. Some inconvenience for people you never heard of but no personal impact for nearly everyone. This time is different, everyone is at risk with the seriousness still unknown.

403 Forbidden again when I previewed this! Am I that controversial? :)

I agree.

Maybe rs will volunteer to be in the experiment using blood from Tom Hanks to develop a vaccine?

No ... but I was thinking that maybe you'd be willing to give one of those Lysol injections a shot or mebbe down a Tide Pod ... you know: take one for the team ...

Hey lighten up or this thread will end too.

Things will get sorted out eventually. Truth and reason will prevail, they always have eventually. For various values of 'eventually'.
