Neighbor dog on my property harassing wildlife

As I posted earlier in this thread, my 12lb ****zu wandered off onto my neighbors property and his 2 domesticated wolves (German shepherds) killed him.
Their Gardner saw the whole thing from a distance. He heard barking and my ****zu was on his back in the “submit” position and the dogs still tore him apart.
I didn’t do anything to my neighbors. I accepted he was killed for merely trespassing on their property. My dog wasn’t harassing their animals, barking or doing anything more than sniffing the grass.
I accepted my responsibility and learned if I ever own another dog, it must me restrained onto my property 24/7/365. Period.
The reason I’m saying this is because anyone on this thread that allows their dog to wander off their property should be prepared for a similar fate.
To think otherwise is haughty and dangerously presumptive to your dogs life.

I feel the exact same way...

IF, my dog wanders off and someone shoots him, I'm going to be pizzed, but I'm going to blame me, not them...

I shot a distant neighbors dog that was killing my chickens, he already had several dead. Dam dog made it home and died on their porch, (half mile away) later I saw the lady who lived there and she asked me, "how would you like it, if someone shot/killed your dog?".

I told her, well, if MY dog comes down to your house and is killing your chickens and you shoot it, call me, I'll come get it and won't hold it against you.

That was the last I heard about her dog from her, or anyone else...

Sadly, HD is absolutely correct from a practical standpoint. And it’s the main reason I don’t have a dog now. I’m still not in one place enough to take care of one the way I would like. Having a dog travel with me, as much as I think I would like it, is not feasible.

I grew up in a rural Texas community where people were not extremely far away but also definitely not close by. But everyone was well acquainted and most were friends of my parents. Everyone had dogs. We never thought about killing or doing any harm to a neighbor’s dog on our property because that would be just about the same as doing it that dog’s owner. Neighbors knew each other and depended on the good will of each other. Your dogs were an extension of your family. People took responsibility for their dogs more than they did their kids to some extent and didn’t let the dogs become problems for neighbors.


That was then. This is now. Times have changed. Sadly.

In your situation, where it was a small neighborhood where everyone accepted each other’s dogs and the dogs were well behaved I could see an exception to my previous post.
Sadly, we are in an era where nearly everyone has their face in a cell phone instead of talking face to face with neighbors. It’s a new type of anti social behavior where we are becoming unable to relate to others.

100% correct!

During the time I’m talking about, prior to ~ early 1970’s for me, I think most rural areas in Texas were that way. It is not a given anymore. Today, people living in dense neighborhoods don’t know most people in adjacent houses.

You should consider having at least a walking stick or pepper spray with you when you are on your ground.

If you do have to shoot them, please use an appropriate shot. I am not sure small birdshot would be much of a deterrent to an angry charging dog. Again, good luck and be careful.

I had a similar issue. I told the owner I would kill his dog if it got on my property and threatened goats. Eventually they did, and I called the county sheriff. I had proof and evidence and the county sheriff went to dog owners ranch where this idiot had 14 dogs and required him to dispatch all 14 right there in front of the sheriff. Done over.

That may be so but on the gun forums, they tell you a 200# man will shake off birdshot & proceed to beat you to death with your shotgun.

Having used a shotgun as a weapon, I wouldn't attempt to protect myself with #6 at 30 yards.
