Head shot?
It wasn't an accident at all that he died from #6's...
I gave him both bbls. in the ribs, and when I skinned/gutted him, the lungs were peppered with small blood spots, so quite a bit of shot made it between the ribs, and he ran out of gas.
Didn't take a long time either, he only went about 30 yards, lay down and died... I've seen them shot in the lungs with a 30-06, that wasn't a lot faster...
Moose don't always die fast, but they aren't hard to kill at all...
BTW, as to pheasants at 40 yards: My dad always patterned his shotguns at 40 yards, and after the second day of pheasant season, the birds would run ahead and fly up at 35 plus yards. His shotgun has a Polly Choke, so he had it marked for 5's or 6's and turned it tighter for them.
At 40 yards dad put them down pretty much every time, so that's not that hard to do IF you pattern your shotgun and see if it patterns good at those ranges with the ammo you are going to use.
