Who keeps gasoline on the farm?

So I've heard many times. Yet, as a prepper, I regularly store gasoline in sealed drums for up to 6 years using PRI-G when I store it, and another dose when I use it.....and it always performs just fine....never a hint of that varnish smell old gasoline gets.

When the zombie apocalypse hits I'll gladly pay you top dollar for your stash of ancient fuel so I can keep my carbureted rolling fortress moving

Until then I'll keep running fresh fuel through my modern truck with temperamental fuel requirements

A friend had gas storage with a standard gas station pump. The price hadn't been changed on it for years. One day an individual stopped and said he had run out of gas. My friend sold him some at the price on the pump. Soon another person ran out of gas and got the same treatment. The guy went out and ran the pump price up to the max. One more person ran out of gas and stopped for aid. He was the last. :)

I understand completely. I've done it as much as an experiment as anything, having been told many many many times it can't be done, and yet I have. I've got one drum that is approaching 10 years now, and when it hits that, I'm going to pull it out and fill up my 2003 Chevy truck and just see how it does. I'm starting to think there may be no limit using PRI, a good sealed drum and a cool, dry location for storage.

I actually think that these newer fuel injected engines will handle old fuel better then the old carbureted ones.
My plow truck sits many years for 6-8 months with anywhere from 1/2 a tank or more of fuel in it and it starts every year,
an older carbed engine would not many times.

With fuel prices where they are I'm considering purchasing a fuel tank (1000 gallon) and storing gasoline here on the farm. I've kept diesel for years. Use a lot more gasoline, but really only in the cars. I'm thinking it would be a good way to buy in bulk and weather out winter fuels and not buy ethanol gas. Has anybody done this? Tank costs about $1.50/gallon, not a big cost overall.
Have diesel and gas tanks.Would not be without them.

We keep a 500 gallon tank along with a 300 gal diesel. Get them filled about once a year, non ethanol on the gasoline. I put the recommended dose of PRI-G (a quart) and PRI-D in the tanks. Both run thru their own filters with water drains. Never a problem.

Andy always impressed with your setups.

(OP). . . I'm considering purchasing a fuel tank (1000 gallon) and storing gasoline here on the farm. . . . not a big cost overall.

Others have commented on the cost/benefit ratio with opinions on the formulations of vintage vs "modern" gasoline, shelf life, etc, etc. Another consideration is permitting and insurance.

Mass. General Laws, Chapter 148, section 23 states: ". . .and no volatile inflammable fluid in quantity exceeding one gallon contained in an approved safety can, and no non-volatile inflammable fluid in quantity exceeding thirty gallons, shall be kept, used or stored, except in the tank of an automobile, motor boat or stationary engine, within fifty feet of any building used for habitation, unless a permit has first been obtained therefor from the head of the fire department under such terms and conditions as he may prescribe . . ."
There are other thresholds, I think somewhere between 100 and 200 gallons, that require annual fees and inspections. (Your Jurisdiction May Vary,)

The insurance angle is to get the permit, photocopy it, and store the original and copy in two separate places not likely to be burned in the same conflagration to prevent your insurance company from denying a claim because you were illegally storing the gasoline, diesel, or whatever.

It would seem many may be in violation...

I have 5 gallons of lacquer thinner, 2.5 gallons of 50-1 2-cycle mix, 5 gallons Jerry cans, etc...

My service van 34 gallon factory tank is set up with aux pump and hose to fill mowers, etc. and continues to work well since 1985...

I pay way more for delivered diesel than the price at the pumps. Irks me, because it never used to be that way. Cost of keeping trucks and drivers on the road in this day and age I guess. Besides, they have you over a barrel. I bet Gasoline would be similar.

The local distributor is going to get their mark up either way they sell it to you - directly or through a retailer.
